Eko Hot Blog reports that key leaders from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), on Saturday, gathered to clean up the defaced Sura underbridge playground on Lagos Island, Lagos.
The officials involved included LAWMA’s Managing Director (MD), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LASPARK’s MD, Tari Taylur, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), Derin Phillips, and SSA Establishments, Toyin Atanda.
The move less than a week after Sanwo-Olu’s called on residents to carry out routine environmental sanitation in their communities.
“Earlier today [Saturday], key figures from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), and other notable officials of the state gathered to clean up the Sura underbridge playground,” LAWMA said in a statement on social media.
“Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA; Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, Managing Director of LASPARK; Tari Taylur, SSA Environment; Hon. Derin Phillips, SSA LSDPC, and Toyin Atanda, SSA Establishments, were all involved in the clean-up exercise.”
After the cleanup, Mrs. Popoola, the LASPARK MD, led the tree planting activity, in line with the governor’s pledge to plant thousands of trees across Lagos by the end of the year.
“This event also reaffirmed the State’s dedication to maintaining cleanliness and environmental health,” the LASTMA statement added.
“Expect to see more of these activities happening throughout the State as we work towards a greener, cleaner Lagos.”
The cleanup of the Sura underbridge playground came a few days after the LAWMA boss visited and decried its poor condition.
“The Osborne/Sura Playground was developed into a park and football field years ago, but since then it has been invaded by miscreants, informal waste collectors and other elements who dump their waste indiscriminately on a daily basis, negatively impacting the aesthetics, health, safety, and recreational value of the location,” he had said.
“We engaged with the stakeholders and delivered a final warning to the illegal occupants to move out or face the full wrath of the law.
“We will be returning here in a few days for a comprehensive environmental sanitation exercise.”
