Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has recently launched a motorized advocacy campaign across key locations in Eti-Osa Local Government, aimed at educating residents on maintaining a sustainable environment.
This initiative was part of LAWMA’s activities for World Cleanup Day, themed “Make Room for Life.”
The campaign began at Lekki Toll Gate and extended to Ilasan, Jakande Bus-stop, Maiyegun Beach Road, Eleganza Bus-stop, Ajah, and Abraham Adesanya, focusing on promoting environmental hygiene and responsible waste management across Lagos.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, explained the importance of the campaign.
“Our goal is to drive a change in behaviour and attitudes towards proper waste management in Lagos.
Through this motorised advocacy, we aim to engage residents of Eti-Osa and beyond, encouraging them to adopt better waste disposal habits and embrace programmes such as our Adopt-a-Bin initiative and Recycling efforts,” he said.
Gbadegesin emphasized that the campaign also targeted critical waste management challenges in the area, particularly illegal dumping and the activities of cart pushers, which have been significant obstacles in maintaining a clean environment.
World Cleanup Day, according to him, serves as a timely reminder for residents to adopt sustainable waste practices like sorting, recycling, and using designated bins.

These actions, he noted, are crucial in reducing waste on the streets and in landfills.
During the roadshow, messages were delivered in English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to encourage a broad spectrum of residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.
The campaign also highlighted the importance of properly sorting, bagging, and containerizing waste.
A focal point of the advocacy was LAWMA’s “Adopt-a-Bin” initiative, introducing new geo-located smart bins equipped with RFID technology to prevent theft and improve waste management efficiency.
This aligns with Lagos State’s vision of becoming a smart city.
Mr. Adewunmi Adetona, head of LAWMA’s Advocacy Unit, urged residents and business owners to embrace these smart bins, underlining the importance of cleanliness in fostering economic growth and attracting investment to the state.
LAWMA’s Ambassador, Alhaji Sikiru Ademola Junaid, also known as Lemon, contributed to the event by engaging the community through music.
His song “Keep Lagos clean and recycle waste” reinforced the message of waste separation and proper disposal.
Joining the campaign were representatives from various LAWMA departments, including sanitation workers, medical personnel, neighbourhood watch members, enforcement teams, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials, showcasing a united effort to create a cleaner, smarter Lagos.
