Lawyer Reveals What Sunday Igboho’s Supporters Told Him In DSS Custody
- The lawyer for the 12 detained supporters of Sunday Igboho has disclosed what the arrested aides told him in the DSS custody.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Pelumi Olajengbesi, the lawyer for the 12 detained supporters of popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo well known as Sunday Igboho, has disclosed what the arrested aides told him in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.
The lawyer, who said he was at the DSS headquarters in Abuja on Friday, lamented the “sorry situation” of his clients in the DSS custody.
Olajengbesi further alleged that after over four weeks of not being allowed to meet with his clients, the DSS feeds the detained supporters of Sunday Igboho with a soup known as “engine oil”, adding that the arrested persons had diarrhoea after eating the soup with Fufu or Eba.
The lawyer said, “It is important to state that their current situation is a classical definition of wholesome human rights abuse. Their health is, sadly, poor and in a sorry situation.
“They are made to sleep on the bare floor and are badly beaten before medical treatment is accorded them to heal and conceal injuries from the torture.
“Lady K, in particular, seems to have sustained fracture on her left leg and is in serious pains. She has not had a change of clothes and folds herself to sleep in the terrible cell,” he said.
According to the lawyer, a larger percent of the detained supporters of Sunday Igboho have high blood pressure issues, saying it was confirmed by the SSS clinic.
Olajengbesi added, “They are fed with a liquid they call ‘engine oil’ as their soup for their food. Their normal routine is to eat and resume the toilet where they purge for long.
“They’re being treated badly and worse than animals, and we did our best in assuring and keeping them upbeat and in high spirits before making our exit,” the lawyer disclosed.
Meanwhile, the DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, could not be reached for comment on the lawyer’s allegation as of the time of filing this report.
EKO HOT BLOG recalls that the 12 supporters of Sunday Igboho were arrested after the DSS raided the Yoruba Nation agitator’s residence in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on July 1, 2021.
The DSS had said that its operatives killed two of Igboho’s aides in a gun battle.
The arrested supporters of Sunday Igboho were later moved to Abuja where they have been in detention.
However, owing to their detention, the Yoruba activist’s supporters through their lawyer, Pelumi Olajemgbesi, filed an application asking the court to “inquire into the circumstances constituting grounds of their arrest and detention since July 2, 2021, and where it deems fit admit applicants on bail”.

They further asked for an order “mandating and compelling the respondents to produce the applicants before this honourable court and show cause as to why the applicants should not be granted bail in accordance with the provisions of section 32 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015”.
However, the Judge of the federal high court, Obiora Egwatu, while ruling on the application, said there was merit in the application.
Egwatu consequently granted all the orders sought and asked the DSS to produce the applicants in court on July 29, 2021.
EKO HOT BLOG further recalls that the court, on Thursday, adjourned the suit brought by the 12 detained persons till Monday after the DSS failed to produce them as earlier ordered by the court.
However, the Judge of the federal high court ordered that the DSS should grant the lawyer to the detained aides access to his clients.
