Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has ordered the military to respond to ongoing skirmishes along Lebanon’s northern and eastern borders with Syria, following a spike in violence that has left several dead and raised fears of escalation.

In a statement released by the president’s office on Monday, Aoun declared that Lebanon “would not allow” the border clashes to continue and authorized a military response to restore stability.

The latest round of violence, which began over the weekend and continued into Monday, resulted in the deaths of three Syrian soldiers. Damascus has blamed the armed Lebanese group Hezbollah for the killings, alleging the group was behind the seizure and execution of the soldiers. Syrian state media, citing unnamed officials, reported that the Syrian army shelled “Hezbollah gatherings” along the border overnight in retaliation.

Hezbollah, however, has strongly denied involvement in the incident. Senior Hezbollah lawmaker Hussein Haj Hassan told Lebanon’s Al Jadeed TV that armed fighters from the Syrian side had crossed into Lebanese territory and attacked border villages, provoking the clashes.

Lebanon’s national army confirmed the fighting on Monday in a statement to the official National News Agency, noting that reinforcements had been dispatched to the affected areas “to control the security situation.”

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring group, reported unconfirmed claims that Lebanese armed groups were engaged in the fighting.

Lebanese media also reported continued low-level skirmishes at dawn, following an attack on a Syrian military vehicle.

In a related incident, four journalists embedded with Syrian forces were lightly wounded early Monday when artillery fire from the Lebanese side struck their position. Syrian sources accused Hezbollah of being responsible for the shelling.

Military officials from Lebanon and Syria are reportedly in contact to prevent the violence from spiraling further.
