Lekki Deep Seaport Shatters Records, Handles Massive 100,000 Containers In First Year

• Facilitated 75 Vessel Arrivals, Including First LNG-Powered Ship in Nigerian Waters

Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a remarkable feat, Lekki Deep Seaport LFTZ Enterprises Limited has announced that the port received 75 vessels, including the first LNG-powered vessel and the largest ship to enter Nigerian waters, measuring 366 LOA, and handled an impressive 100,000 containers between April 2023 and April 2024.

Announcing this milestone on its official LinkedIn social media platform, the port stated that this achievement demonstrated its ability to support global trade effectively. The statement read in part, “As the only deep sea port in Nigeria with the ability to handle 14,000 TEU container vessels, we put our facilities to good use and have handled over 100,000 containers in the past 1 year, showcasing our capability to support global trade.”

Expanding its operations, the port embarked on transhipment activities in June 2023, facilitating over 25,000 transhipments to date. “We also embarked on transhipment from June 2023 with the arrival of the first transhipment vessel, the CMA CGM RIMBAUD. Since then, we have facilitated over 25,000 transhipments and counting.”

In its efforts to ensure efficient and seamless traffic management, the port created a 153-capacity pre-gate truck park, which will work in conjunction with “our vehicle booking system at the Lekki Port gate to avoid congestion.” Additionally, the port deployed two Nuctech FS 6000 non-intrusive scanners by the Nigerian Customs Service to fast-track the process of cargo examination and evacuation, ensuring safety and security for goods passing through its gates.

The Lekki Deep Seaport also expressed gratitude for the support received from the Nigerian Ports Authority, which provided marine services and tug boats.

Furthermore, the port was duly authorized by the Nigerian Customs Service to process and receive pharmaceutical products, expanding its operational versatility and contributing to public health.

“As we reflect on these achievements, we are reminded of the journey’s challenges and triumphs. Our success is a testament to the hard work, innovation, and collaboration of our dedicated team, our partners, Lekki Freeport Terminal & CMA CGM, the government agencies at the port working tirelessly and the maritime community,” the port declared.
