EKO HOT BLOG reports that Kenneth Okonkwo, a spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP), has called on security agencies to bring to justice the perpetrators behind the killing of the LP candidate for Enugu East Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu.
Okonkwo, who is also a Nollywood veteran, made the call in a statement via his Twitter handle on Thursday.
He urged opposition candidates and their supporters in Enugu State to unite against political violence and manipulation in the state. The LP spokesman blamed the Enugu State government for the killing, stating that the government is responsible for security in the state.
Chukwu was reportedly killed while returning from a campaign in Enugu on Wednesday night. Okonkwo described the killing as a demonstration of the willingness of defeated politicians in Enugu State to use intimidation to subvert the will of the people.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the senatorial election in Enugu East Senatorial District until the LP fields a replacement for Chukwu.
In his statement, Okonkwo said, “The killing of Labour Party (LP) candidate for Enugu East Senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu, has shown the preparedness of defeated politicians in Enugu State to use intimidation to subvert the will of the people. May God rain His destruction on the perpetrators of this heinous act.”
He added, “The security agencies must fish out the culprits immediately before this unpardonable aggression leads to the breakdown of law and order. I am holding the Enugu State Governor responsible for this heinous crime being the Chief Security Officer in Enugu State.”
Okonkwo also urged the opposition candidates and their supporters in Enugu State to unite and stand against the manipulation and violence which he said is associated with the old order of politics in the state.
He said, “Let us use this opportunity to vote out the murderous regime in Enugu State for a new Nigeria. Oyibo Chukwu must not die in vain.”
The LP spokesperson’s statement comes amidst growing concern over the increasing violence in the run-up to the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. Political violence and intimidation have become a major issue in previous elections, and there are fears that the upcoming polls could be marred by similar incidents.
