Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated that Lagos has long upheld local government autonomy, emphasizing its importance in fostering grassroots development.
He made this statement on Friday while receiving representatives of the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria, led by its President, Albert Ashipa, during a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Marina.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu affirmed that Lagos had been practicing local government autonomy even before the recent Supreme Court ruling on the matter. He noted, “Our council chairmen can confirm that there has been no executive interference in their activities. We believe that effective local government administration is pivotal to state development.”
The governor expressed confidence that the Supreme Court’s decision would further strengthen local government autonomy across the country, enhancing development nationwide. He assured the association of his administration’s continued collaboration to foster growth, deepen democracy, and share knowledge.
Sanwo-Olu commended the association’s 5,000 members for their contributions to grassroots governance, urging them to support serving council chairmen with their wealth of experience. He described the retreat’s theme as “timely and relevant,” aligning with Lagos State’s commitment to grassroots development.
Albert Ashipa, the association’s president, lauded Sanwo-Olu’s administration for promoting local government autonomy and delivering critical infrastructure projects statewide. He praised the governor’s leadership, noting that his exemplary governance had earned him the Best Governor in Nigeria award from the association.
Ashipa also congratulated Sanwo-Olu for leading the All Progressives Congress (APC) to victory in the recent Ondo State governorship election as the Chairman of the party’s National Campaign Council. He appealed to the governor for support in ensuring the success of the association’s retreat.
