EKO HOT BLOG reports that the delegation sought the governor’s support for their upcoming retreat themed, “Local Government Autonomy: Bringing Government and Economic Development Closer to the People – Lagos State as a Case Study.”

Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and other members of the state’s Executive Council were present at the meeting.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu affirmed that Lagos had been practicing local government autonomy even before the recent Supreme Court ruling on the matter. He noted, “Our council chairmen can confirm that there has been no executive interference in their activities. We believe that effective local government administration is pivotal to state development.”

The governor expressed confidence that the Supreme Court’s decision would further strengthen local government autonomy across the country, enhancing development nationwide. He assured the association of his administration’s continued collaboration to foster growth, deepen democracy, and share knowledge.

Sanwo-Olu commended the association’s 5,000 members for their contributions to grassroots governance, urging them to support serving council chairmen with their wealth of experience. He described the retreat’s theme as “timely and relevant,” aligning with Lagos State’s commitment to grassroots development.

Albert Ashipa, the association’s president, lauded Sanwo-Olu’s administration for promoting local government autonomy and delivering critical infrastructure projects statewide. He praised the governor’s leadership, noting that his exemplary governance had earned him the Best Governor in Nigeria award from the association.
