Liam Payne Had Multiple Drugs In System At Time Of Fatal Fall, Autopsy Reveals

Pop star Liam Payne had multiple drugs, including crack cocaine and methamphetamine, in his system when he tragically fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Argentina, according to initial toxicology reports cited by U.S. media on Monday.

The 31-year-old British singer and former One Direction member died last week after falling from a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires.

ABC News and TMZ reported that a drug cocktail known as “pink cocaine” — which contains methamphetamine, ketamine, and MDMA — was detected during a partial autopsy, based on anonymous sources familiar with the early results. Crack cocaine and benzodiazepines were also identified.

Additionally, ABC reported that an “improvised aluminuum pipe” used for drug ingestion was found in Payne’s room.

Payne had a history of publicly discussing his battles with substance abuse and the pressures of fame, which began in his teenage years. Staff had reportedly called emergency services twice before his death, describing a guest “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol” who was “destroying” the hotel room.

Prosecutors revealed that Payne was alone at the time of his fatal fall and was experiencing a “substance abuse episode,” with post-mortem results showing that he had suffered “multiple traumas” and “internal and external hemorrhaging.”

Local newspaper Clarin published photos from the hotel room, showing white powder on a table, a piece of aluminum foil, and a broken television screen. The prosecutor’s office confirmed the presence of substances that appeared to be “narcotics and alcoholic beverages,” along with broken furniture and other objects.

A hotel employee, suspected of supplying Payne with drugs on the day of his death, has been questioned by police but has not been arrested or charged.

Payne rose to fame as a member of One Direction, the globally successful pop group that emerged from “The X Factor” in 2010. The group, one of the highest-grossing live acts in the world, went on hiatus in 2016.

Though Payne found solo success, he struggled with alcoholism in recent years and frequently spoke about the challenges of fame. He is survived by his seven-year-old son, whom he shared with Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy.
