Like its captain, Lionel Messi, who blasted the officiating after Brazil defeated Argentina 2-0 early Wednesday, the body in charge of football in Argentina, AFA has issued a strongly worded complaint blaming the officials for not consulting Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for certain decisions that would have altered the result.
“In particular, by not using the VAR in two specific moves that would have undoubtedly reversed the final result,” an AFA statement stated while referring to possible penalties against Brazil for fouls on Nicolás Otamendi and Kun Agüero, the second leading to Brazil’s second goal.
The AFA, in a text of six pages published on its website and sent to Conmebol, assures that there was “imprudence” in the arbitration appointment because Ecuadorian referee, Zambrano, had “negative antecedents” and “does not possess” the “technical qualities to lead a party of such transcendence”.
In the six-page extract, the AFA has ended up insinuating that the referee’s performance was influenced by the refereeing committee, also questioning Alejandro Dominguez, the CONMEBOL president, for a perceived lack of ethics, loyalty, and transparency.
Just after the match, Messi had furiously blasted the officiating, describing certain decision that went against its side as “bullshit”.
