Barcelona talismanic captain Lionel Messi, after 753 games for the Catalan giant was shown his first ever red card in club football, as Barcelona lost the Spanish super cup to Athletic Bilbao yesterday.
Despite enduring a tough start to the 2020/21 season, bookmakers had tipped the Blaugrana to sweep aside Athletic Club in last night’s Super Cup encounter, but it was the Basque side that emerged victorious after coming back from the dead twice in the encounter.
Barcelona couldn’t hold on to their 2-1 lead before the final whistle was blown at full time (90′) causing the game to go right to the wire before Bilbao ultimately snatched it in the extra period.

Due to frustration, Lionel was caught trying to elbow a player from Bilbao; an action which has been deemed as a misconduct in football, which in turn saw the Argentine receive his first ever red card as Barcelona player after VAR check.
Athletic Bilbao however got their first trophy after 31 years after punching above their weight to floor an unimpressive Barcelona side.
