List Of Bills Tinubu Signed Into Law In 2024

1. Defence Corporation Bill
On February 9, 2024, President Tinubu signed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law. This bill was introduced to address environmental and developmental concerns within host communities of power-generating companies (GENCOs).
Key provisions of the bill include:
- Allocation of 5% of the actual annual operating expenditures of GENCOs from the previous year for host community development.
- Establishment of a fund to be managed by a reputable Trustee/Manager, jointly appointed by the respective GENCO and its host community.
- Utilization of these funds for infrastructure development within host communities.
2. National Student Loan Bill
In April 2024, President Tinubu signed the National Student Loan Re-enactment Bill into law during a ceremony at the State House. Attendees included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
The bill led to the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), aimed at providing financial aid to tertiary institution students. Although initially introduced in 2023, implementation faced delays before its successful relaunch in April.
3. ₦70,000 New Minimum Wage Bill
In July 2024, Tinubu signed the National Minimum Wage Amendment Bill into law. This legislation raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, addressing long-standing demands from labor unions.
Highlights of the bill include:
- Mandating wage reviews every three years to align with inflation.
- Marking a response to nationwide strikes led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), including a shutdown of the national power grid to press for increased wages.
4. National Anthem Bill
On May 29, 2024, President Tinubu approved the National Anthem Bill, reinstating the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” While the move aimed to honor Nigeria’s heritage, it drew criticism from many Nigerians, who saw it as a distraction from pressing economic challenges.
5. Bill for the Establishment of the Centre for Arms Control
On September 17, 2024, Tinubu signed into law the bill establishing the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. The initiative was hailed by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu as a critical step in combating the proliferation of illegal arms and enhancing national security.
6. North-West and South-East Development Commission Bills
On July 24, 2024, the President signed the North-West and South-East Development Commission Bills into law. These commissions are tasked with addressing regional development challenges:
- South-East Development Commission: Focused on erosion control and road rehabilitation.
- North-West Development Commission: Dedicated to tackling infrastructure deficits in the region.
