Goodluck Jonathan Igbo Presidency

If there has been any president in the history of our Democracy that faced the highest level of destructive opposition and brutal criticism all in the name of freedom of speech is no other than our ex beloved president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The Bayelsa state born came into office in a time of uncertainty and was forced to contest the 2011 presidential election. His tenure fully began after his victory at the polls and taking the oath of office. Since then, the Ijaw man displayed a leadership style that reflects humility and meekness.

This was unfortunately misinterpreted to be weakness and tolerance for corruption. The Goodluck administration performed absolutely well particular in the area of economy but however, had serious lapses in dealing with security, corruption and other negative elements – perhaps because he wasn’t an assertive leader.

Opposition groups and critics were one of the greatest beneficiary of ex president Jonathan’s democratic tendencies as they completely enjoyed freedom of speech (harsh criticism) without any form of harassment by State authorities.

Fortunately a few well meaning Nigerians have decided to retrace their steps by genuinely offering an apology to the immediate past leader over their destructive criticism. So far, here are top politicians who have apologised to former president Goodluck Jonathan

Dele Momodu: .

After making various sacarstic comments against the ex leader, Ovation magazine owner saw the need to tender an apology to him years after he left office.

This he did in a written form and it was acknowledged by Jonathan. Good luck however stated that he had no rift with Dele and that his criticism could have been born out of genuine concern for the nation.

Timi Frank

Mr. Frank was one of the leaders in the APC who fiercely condemned the one time Bayelsa state Governor. He kept making unguarded statements against him till after a dispute rose within his party.

Mr Timi seems to be unhappy with the way things were going under the APC led federal government and suddenly appreciated the previous regime. He dumped the party as youth leader and apologised for his harsh criticism against the former president.

Dino Melaye:

I don’t think there was any other person that faulted GEJ like Sen. Dino. Just immediately after he left the Peoples Democratic party to the APC at that time, Melaye seized the opportunity as an opposition member to make reckless and baseless accusation against the Bayelsa State indigene.

He was very aggressive with his attacks. However as things changed the kogi state lawmaker realised that it was a huge mistake he made and he acted on the basis of ignorance.

As a sign of remorse, he retraced his steps and reconciled with the one time presidential candidate. He made this apology during a book launch organised by Jonathan.

Ali Ndume:

The Borno state lawmaker acknowledged that he was very harsh in his backlash against ex politician.

According to him, he later found out that indeed Goodluck really meant well for the nation. His apology came few years after the former number one citizen had left office.

Aminu Shagari:

Aminu is one of the sons of Former civilian president Shehu shagari. He is also a member of the lower legislative chamber of the national assembly.

Hon. Shagari actually confessed that he was part of those who deliberately fought to bring down the Jonathan and the PDP in order to enthrone Buhari.

But the sokoto State lawmaker accepted that he made a mistake by taking such an action and tendered an apology. Aminu shagari admitted that indeed the Ijaw man was the kind of leader that the country deserved.

Rabiu Kwankwaso:

Rabiu fought GEJ’s administration to the extent that he ensured the All Progressive Congress Party cleared kano state during his time. He even boasted of using “almajiris” to chase Jonathan away from his position.

This all happened when he was in APC but as he decamped to the PDP and contested in the presidential primaries, The Kano State heavyweight publicly apologised during his speech at the 2019 PDP primaries.
