Eko Hot Blog reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is back on the field for the off-cycle 2023 governorship elections holding in Bayelsa State, Kogi State, and Imo State commence today.
In Bayelsa, Governor Duoye Diri is seeking a second term in office under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, the governor faces stiff opposition from the former governor and the immediate past Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva.
Similarly, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who coincidentally also became governor through supreme Court judgment like his Bayelsa counterpart, has the Labour Party’s candidate, Athan Achonu, and his obedient supporters to battle with. PDP candidate Samuel Anyanwu is also in the race, hoping to regain control of the state for the People’s Democratic Party.
In Kogi, Senator Dino Melaye is back on the ballot. This time, he is not aiming for a return to the red chamber but to succeed Governor Yahaya Bello as the Chief Security Officer of the Confluence State. The Governor’s anointed candidate, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, having emerged victorious from the legal battle that trailed his success at the party’s primary election, appears to be the candidate to beat.
However, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate (SDP), Muri Ajaka, who was a chieftain of the APC until things fell apart a few months ago aims to cause a major upset in the race.
It remains to be seen how much damage the Kogi East-born politician can cause for his former party.
