Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract with the club. The 33-year-old defender’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

Van Dijk joins teammate Mohamed Salah, who also signed a two-year extension recently, in committing his future to the Reds.

“It was always going to be Liverpool,” said Van Dijk, who had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. “That was always the plan for me and my family.”

Van Dijk has played 314 matches for Liverpool since he joined from Southampton for £75 million in January 2018. He was named captain in 2023 after Jordan Henderson left the club.

There was never any doubt in my mind,” he said. “Someone recently called me an adopted Scouser, and I was really proud to hear that. Extending my time at this club for another two years is an amazing feeling.”

During his time at Liverpool, Van Dijk has helped the team win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups.

Under new manager Arne Slot, also from the Netherlands, Van Dijk has been a key player as Liverpool pushes to win their 20th league title.

In March, Van Dijk said he wasn’t sure if he would stay at Anfield, but talks with the club improved this month, leading to the new agreement.

Now that Salah and Van Dijk have renewed their contracts, attention turns to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England defender, recently back from injury, is out of contract in July and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
