Lockdown: Police Shoot 10-Year-Old-Boy In Jigawa

The violent protest occurred in Sankara community, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Monday evening when police officers enforcing the lockdown imposed on a market allegedly shot a ten-year-old boy identified as Usman Abdulkadir.

As alleged by residents, multiple gunshots were fired by the police, and teargas was equally used by them to disperse people transacting business at Sankara market, with one of the bullets allegedly hit the ten years old boy.

It was earlier reported that Jigawa State Government had suspended all weekly markets across the State to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and the police were trying to enforce that directive at the market.

The father of the victim, Abdulkadir Suleiman, told newsmen that his son, Usman, suffered a bullet wound on his head.

The victim was earlier taken to Sankara primary healthcare centre, where he was referred to Ringim General Hospital, adding that “He is presently receiving treatment,” he said.

The father stated that “The police officer who shot my son is well known for brutality in the area, he has been identified by name.”

Meanwhile, the Police Spokesperson in Jigawa State, Audu Jinjiri, said the police went to the market to enforce a shutdown order but were met with stiff resistance by some of the traders who peddled stones at them.

He, however, denied that the teenager was shot by the police, saying “The boy was hit by one of the stones peddled by the angry locals.”
