Lockdown: Why You Should Stop Posting Your Account Number Online For Giveaways

As the lockdown gradually comes to an end, Nigerians are still finding it hard to survive, hence the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, revealed a new trick used by fraudsters and scammers to steal money from their victims online.

The Commission warned those who usually post their account number under a thread on social media just to receive giveaway (free money) and those who click and follow links to websites promising to give out free money.

This was revealed by Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of the EFCC, on Tuesday, who also noted that “they are faceless elements circulating ‘Free N5,000 lockdown funds’ messages online and people need to ignore them.

Magu who spoke through the Commission’s spokesperson, Tony Orilade, added that the claim was being circulated through a phishing link via WhatsApp.

“The link is embedded with a link titled https://bit.ly/free-N5000. Whenever the link is clicked, it would redirect recipients of the message to a phishing website address https://fg-free-funds.blogspot.com.

“Visitors to this fraudulent website will find an online questionnaire from which they must respond to trigger the phishing”, he explained.

The EFCC Chairman further assured that the information of the website is being investigated and advised citizens to be careful so as not to fall victim.

“We would not stop bursting every scheme designed to defraud Nigerians of their hard-earned money”, Magu maintained.
