Nigerians have taken to social media to bemoan an imminently quiet Christmas festivities following an upward surge of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic triggered by a second wave of infections across the globe.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been the running theme in the year 2020, and since breaking out in January, has killed millions around the world and left many more under the grip of its infection.
With no known remedy and also given the deadly nature of the virus, a compulsory shutdown of government and private institutions became necessary to restrict human contact and mitigate the spread of the virus to the barest minimum.
However, with the steep economic implications of the lockdown restrictions and a reduction of the number of recorded cases, different governments moved to initiate a phased easing of the lockdown restrictions to enable normal service resume, while efforts were being intensified to accelerate the timeline for the development of a vaccine.
With the approval of the first vaccine to scale all three stages of clinical trials, the Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, it had seemed like the worst was over, and that the horrid days when economic and social activities had been barred would be put behind us.

But a recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases and fatalities all over the world would suggest otherwise, as several governments are already initiating phase II lockdown restrictions at a time many around the world were dusting up their dancing shoes.
As observed by Eko Hot Blog, Nigeria has not been an exception, the past days have witnessed an all time daily record of over a thousand cases within a single day.
Only yesterday, December 18th, 2020, the Lagos state government once again tightened its stance of public gatherings, a move which has potentially set up a phase II lockdown.
Nigerians have consequently taken to social media to bemoan the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hashtagged Lockdown2, below are some of the tweets.
