EKO HOT BLOG reports that Louis van Gaal, former head coach of Manchester United, has shared his thoughts on the Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo “GOAT” debate.
Despite both players being in the twilight of their careers, they continue to divide opinions among footballing figures and fans alike.
During an interview with Onda Cero, Van Gaal weighed in on the topic by stating that he preferred Ronaldo over Messi because he is more of a team player. He cited Ronaldo’s superior record in terms of titles won as evidence of this.
Van Gaal said, “The best players of this period are Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Choosing between them is difficult. Ronaldo has more results than Messi in titles. Messi has more individual awards, but Ronaldo is more of a team player.”
He also emphasized that as a team coach, he prioritizes players who contribute to the team’s overall success rather than individual accolades. However, he acknowledged that Messi may still be considered the best football player by some.
The Messi-Ronaldo debate has been a topic of discussion for over a decade, with both players achieving numerous milestones and breaking records during their illustrious careers. Messi has won seven Ballon d’Or awards, while Ronaldo has won five.
