The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) recently organized a transformative capacity-building training for over 80 coaches in the state, reflecting its unwavering dedication to advancing sports development.
Themed “Way Forward in Building Our Coach,” the event focused on refining coaches’ expertise and enhancing their contributions to the growth of sports within Lagos State,Eko Hot Blog reports.
During the training held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, the LSSC’s Technical Department Director, Uthman Okunnu, highlighted the importance of continuous education and pledged to keep coaches informed about the latest rules and regulations guiding various sports.
“This is a forward-thinking initiative because as coaches, you must never remain stagnant,” Okunnu stated. “The programme was designed as a classroom format to engage coaches in discussing the current trends and effective athlete management.”
The Director of the Technical Department, LSSC, Uthman Okunnu, disclosed plans to reinforce the collaboration between the technical directorate, sports development, and sports secretaries.
This effort aims to ensure a consistent improvement in regulatory knowledge among coaches.
During the training, Dr. Busayo Olayemi from the University of Lagos emphasized the significance of maintaining an open-minded approach to coaching.
He advised against preferential treatment and encouraged coaches to provide equitable development opportunities for all athletes. Dr. Olayemi also highlighted the critical role of communication in sports.
He noted that effective communication promotes team unity and empowers athletes to express themselves confidently.
In addition, Dr. Joy Mayaki, a former State and National Athlete and current lecturer at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), stressed the importance of mastering one’s sport and actively listening to athletes.
By doing so, coaches can better understand their athletes’ needs and help them reach their full potential.
Overall, the training programme organised by the Lagos State Sports Commission served as a valuable platform for coaches to enhance their skills and contribute effectively to sports development in Lagos State.
The insights shared by facilitators will undoubtedly help in fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement among the coaching fraternity.
She stated, “Patience, knowledge of your sport, clear objectives, and targeted goals are essential. When these elements are combined, they pave the way for success.”
Other experienced resource persons with extensive backgrounds in sports administration and management facilitated sessions on topics such as “Effective Skills and Competency Needed to Achieve High-Level Successes in Coaching” and “Psychological Approach in Building Lagos State Coaches.”
Building on its previous success in training physical education teachers on the fundamentals of cricket across the six education districts, Lagos State continues to prioritize sports development through its school system, recognising its pivotal role in bridging knowledge gaps and shaping young minds.
