LSUBEB Boss Tasks Parents To Monitor Social Vices Among Children

The Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB), Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin has decried the increasing trend of cultism and abuse of drugs among school children, advising parents to take a keen interest in their children now that schools are on holidays.

He said the fact that school children are on long vacation makes it more imperative for parents and guardians to be very observant about their children by monitoring their movements, engaging them productively and encouraging them to read books.

Sopeyin, who gave this advice while appearing on a television show “A.M Saturday Live” over the weekend, said that the task of fighting cultism and drug abuse must not be left to government alone but be complemented by parents and non-governmental organisations.

According to him, community leaders and all other relevant stakeholders must see these several vices confronting children like a challenge and know that they have the responsibility to stamp them out of society.

“The underlying fact here is that children generally are more vulnerable during the holidays, hence the need to pay adequate attention to all that they do during this period and, if possible, regulate their exposure to negative things on the social media”, he stated.

He assured parents and guardians that the government will not relent in protecting the children from the menace of cultism and drug abuse, especially among school children.

Sopeyin also disclosed that the registration of school children into government primary schools is ongoing, urging parents to take advantage of the extension of the registration, which runs through September, to enrol their children.

The SUBEB chairman also called on parents to take advantage of the free health mission tagged “Healthy Bee Project” recently launched by the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and take their children to the various centres for adequate medical attention so that their kids would be healthier when schools resume for the next academic session.
