Lufthansa is under fire after offloading passengers in Abuja despite prior runway repair notices from Nigerian authorities. The airline blames weather and safety, but critics say poor planning is to blame.

On the day in question, passengers aboard a Lufthansa flight were unexpectedly offloaded, with the airline citing poor weather and a shortened runway as reasons for its decision.
Initially, reports suggested Lufthansa was unaware of the runway repairs. But Nigerian aviation authorities – specifically the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) were quick to clarify.
Both agencies confirmed that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) had been circulated well in advance, starting July 21st, providing precise details about the scheduled closure and even including GPS coordinates for flight planning accuracy.

Lufthansa has since admitted it received the NOTAM. However, the airline maintains that unpredictable tailwinds and rainfall affected the aircraft’s ability to land safely on the shortened strip. It defends its actions as precautionary and safety-driven.
Still, this explanation hasn’t convinced everyone. Aviation consultant Mr. Botunde Dele questioned why only Lufthansa appeared to struggle, while similar long-haul carriers continued to operate normally.
“Blaming local authorities seems misplaced,” he said, pointing to the universal accessibility of NOTAMs and the importance of operational consistency.
FAAN has now confirmed that the repairs have been completed successfully and normal flight activities have resumed without incident.
