LUKARAWAS: Defence Headquarters Confirms Emergence of New Terrorist Group in Northwest
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas,’ heightening insecurity in northwestern Nigeria.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, announced this development during a military operations briefing on Thursday in Abuja.
Buba explained that the group originated from the Republic of Niger following the recent coup, which disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

The terrorists have since started infiltrating northern Sokoto and Kebbi States from the Niger and Mali regions, taking advantage of reduced border security.
“Before the coup, joint operations with Nigerien forces kept these groups at bay,” Buba said. “The terrorists are now exploiting cooperation gaps and challenging terrains to enter remote areas of Nigeria’s northwest, aiming to spread their ideology.”

He added that local communities initially welcomed the group, mistaking them as allies, which delayed reporting their movements to the military.
Buba reassured that Nigerian troops are intensifying intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to counter the terrorists, who use vast under-governed areas for cover and harassment of residents. “Troops are locating and neutralizing this threat,” he affirmed.
