Ma Ekwunife Goes Home
Death is inevitable, it awaits everyone irrespective of status, therefore, everyone must amend his or her way of life. People should be honest to self and God and love each other because humans must give account of their stewardship in heaven, and in God’s court, there is no appeal.
Vicar of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Nawgu, Dunukofia, Local Government Area, Venerable Godfrey Nkanyimo stated this in his homily at the burial of the late Mrs. Comfort Ekwunife at her husband’s country home in Nawgu. Ven. Nkanyimo urged Christians to see the end as vital, adding that anyone who doesn’t see it today will see it tomorrow . Many young people today, he said, engaged in idolatry against worshiping God in truth and sincerity.
“Youths pay more attention to masquerading, idol worship, and every vice that you can think of. Sometimes, you hear people say suicide, their attitudes leads to suicide. Their senses are lost when they engage in such. Youths should engage their energy and time in the things of God for a better tomorrow. There is life after death,, it doesn’t end here, only when you are born of Christ that you can enjoy eternal life.”
In appreciating his mother’s effort for single handedly raising him and his siblings after they lost their father, the deceased eldest son, Michael Ekwunife, described his mother as a God fearing woman, who believed that vengeance is of God. “A Christian who didn’t bother herself with trying to get back to anyone who hurt her. She believed that God’s time is the best.”
“She was a peaceful woman, she loved everybody. There is no difference between her children and that of others, she treats everyone equally. She was a woman that believed in hard work and justice. I will pass the legacy she bequeathed to me across to my children.”
Describing her mother as exceptional, the deceased first daughter, Blessing Nweke, said she couldn’t compare her to any other. “She was a woman of the people, held no grudge or hatred towards fellow humans. She loved the things of God. I will miss her humour and wise counsel. My prayer is that my siblings and I would sustain her legacy.”
Daughter-in-law, Ify Ekwunife prayed to God to help her step into her mother-in-law’s shoes and accomplish more than what she did. “She was a great woman, a loving mother. Mother of all, she wasn’t selective; everybody was her child no matter who you are. I will greatly miss her. I drew inspiration from her that she had a kind heart.”
A prominent peace advocate, late Madam Comfort Ekwunife was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
