Madrasah Issue: Kwara State Governor Constitutes 10-Man Probe Panel

The governor of Kwara state, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has constituted a 10-man committee to probe the circumstances surrounding a viral video of students being brutalized in an Islamic school otherwise known as Madrasah. 

Ekohotblog had earlier reported the suspension of the head of the Madrasah school pending the final report of a probe panel which has been constituted by the state government today.

You will recall that students of Misbaudeen Islamic Centre, in Ganmo, Ifelodun local government area of the state became the topic of conversation across the nation when a video was released online of a femal and 3 other male students were being beaten by their seniors, an action which was sanctioned by the school head.

The students were said to have allegedly attended a birthday party where they took alcohol and shared pictures of it online which brought shame to the madrasah hence the punitive measure taken by the school which unfortunately generated negative reactions across social media.

According to the press release from the chief press secretary to the governor, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, the state government has set up a 10-man panel to probe the case.

The panel which comprises of Islamic scholars, community leaders and government officials will be chaired by Retired Justice Idris Haroon.

According to the release:

“Other members are Hon. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu; Special Assistant to the Governor on Religion (Islam) Alhaji Ibrahim Dan Maigoro; Prof. Hamzat Abdulraheem; Prof Badmus Yusuf; Prof. Abubakar Imam-Aliagan; Dr. Mohammed Ghali Alaya; Dr. Saudat AbdulBaqi; Hajia Balikis Oladimeji of the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN); Mallam Lawal Olohungbebe; and Dr AbdulHameed Sanni (Secretary).

The terms of reference of the committee include to meet with the affected students, their parents, and the school authorities on the circumstances around the corporal punishments meted to them following the students’ organisation and participation in a birthday party, alleged consumption of liquor and publication of the video footage of same on the social media; review the reward and disciplinary methods in such schools; and make recommendations to the government on how to prevent a recurrence of such in the state.”

The committee was also given a one week ultimatum to present its report beginning from their first sitting.
