1. Seven die, 18 injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident 

No fewer than seven persons were burnt to death while 18 others sustained various degrees of injury in an accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday.

The accident occurred a few metres after Sapade bridge in Remo-North local government area of Ogun state.

The Federal Road Safety Corps Public Education Officer, Ogun Command, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

Okpe said a total of 28 persons were involved which comprised 25 male adults, two female adults and one female child.

2. Aviation unions threaten strike over ‘unresolved grievances 

The threat of a strike by aviation unions in Nigeria has raised concerns over potential disruptions to aviation services in the country.

The unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service Technical and Recreation Services Employees, have cited several grievances, including the non-release of the reviewed Condition of Service that has been negotiated for over seven years with four aviation agencies.

Other issues include the non-implementation of minimum wage consequential adjustments and arrears for the Nigeria Meteorological Agency since 2019, as well as the planned demolition of agency buildings in Lagos for an airport city project by the Minister of Aviation.

3. Airline announces network expansion 

A Nigerian airline, Green Africa, has announced plans to expand its network across Nigeria starting August 2023, connecting Abuja to Sokoto, Kano, Enugu, and Ibadan

It would also be establishing a base in Abuja and extending its presence to 16 routes across 10 states including the Federal Capital Territory.

In addition to the new routes, Green Africa will also add a second daily service between Benin and Abuja and resume service between Abuja and Owerri.

The airline aims to continue its reputation as one of the most affordable and punctual carriers in Nigeria, with fares starting as low as N25,000 on all routes, including the new ones, if booked at least 60 days in advance.

4. Banana Island building collapse: No casualty recorded, 27 rescued – Lagos govt 

The Lagos State Government has said nobody died in the collapse of a seven-storey building under construction on Banana Island, Ikoyi on Wednesday evening.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated this while giving an update on the incident.

Omotoso added that the state government has launched an intensified probe into the collapse following a directive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

5. Police sack escorts of Kano singer, Rarara, over misuse of firearms 

The Nigeria Police Force, on Thursday, dismissed officers attached to the famous praise-singer of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dauda Adamu Kahutu Rarara.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman of the force, who announced the decision at Force Headquarters in Abuja, said the officers were dismissed for wasting live ammunition.

The escorts were recently captured firing live bullets into the air as the singer made his way into his vehicle in Kano, where he is based.

Their action had sparked outrage and the force vowed to take action.

6. College of Education Student in Kwara dies during lecture 

There was pandemonium during an ongoing lecture in one of the classrooms in Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin Kwara State capital, when a 100-level student, identified as Aminat Tajudeen, a day to Matriculation ceremony suddenly slumped and died.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Wednesday.

She was said to have earlier in the day collected her matriculation gown for the ceremony scheduled for Thursday (today) and returned to class with excitement when the incident suddenly happened.

7. TETFund okays N30bn for projects in six varsities, polys, CoE 

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has earmarked N30 billion for high-impact projects under its 2023 Special High Impact intervention in tertiary institutions.

The N30bn would be used to execute high-impact projects in six universities, six polytechnics and six colleges of education under its 2023 intervention.

Under the TETFund High Impact Project intervention, one university, one college of education and one polytechnic will be selected each from the six geopolitical zones to benefit from the project every intervention year.

8. We’re not recruiting, says CBN 

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dissociated itself from a fake recruitment exercise asking job seekers to submit their BVN and discriminating against persons with disability.

The fake recruitment advert directed unsuspecting Nigerians to a portal inviting “eligible” members of the public to submit applications in an exercise that will commence soon.

According to the CBN: “The fraudulent website lists requirements for eligibility to include, among other qualifications, the possession of a Bank Verification Number (BVN). The portal goes on to state that those with physical disabilities are not eligible to apply”.

Setting the records straight, the CBN said it is “currently not carrying out any general recruitment exercise and will never request for the BVN of intending applicants nor discriminate against persons with physical disabilities”.

9. Tinubu among TIME 100 most influential people of 2023

Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has been listed in TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World.
TIME magazine included Tinubu in its 2023 list under leaders category.

The former Lagos governor and the United States President, Joe Biden were among the 19 leaders on the TIME 100 list.

The American news magazine described Tinubu as a longtime political power broker, who according to them, helped Nigeria to restore democracy in 1999 after fighting military rule, LEADERSHIP Newspaper reports.

10. NSCDC parades 3 cannabis peddlers in Ekiti 

The Ekiti State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has paraded three suspects who specialised in refining and selling of substance suspected to be Cannabis sativa in Ado Ekiti.

The suspects Agbekeye Ayomide, 22, Oladimeji Akintomiwa, 21, and Agbeleye Beulah, 20, were arrested at Zone 1 Olorunda Adebayo in Ado metropolis where they were selling the products.

In a statement, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Tolulope Afolabi, said following a series of complaints by the Olorunda landlords about the activities of drug peddlers in the area, the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of the command swung into action and arrested the suspects.
