1. Owu descendants must support new Olowu – Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday, urged the people of Owu kingdom in Ogun State to rally behind the new monarch of the ancient town.
Obasanjo, who is the Balogun of Owu kingdom, also prayed that he does not want to witness another Olowu of Owu, Abeokuta in his lifetime after the emergence of the new Oba.
Obasanjo said this shortly before he inaugurated a 300-man central planning committee for the installation and coronation ceremony for the new Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola.
The former president said his prayer was anchored on the fact that being an older man to the monarch, he would not wish to be alive witnessing another Olowu of Owu, Abeokuta.
Obasanjo who spoke in Yoruba said, “I pray I don’t witness another Olowu of Owu after our new Kabiyesi.
2. Osun PDP gets caretaker committee
The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has constituted a caretaker committee that will steer the activities of the Osun State chapter of the party for three months.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who announced this in Abuja, on Thursday, explained that the decision was sequel to the expiration of the tenure of the previous caretaker committee and is in line with the powers of the NWC under the PDP Constitution, 2017 (as amended).
He said, “The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP has, on behalf of the National Executive Committee, constituted a caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the Osun State chapter of the party with effect from today, Thursday, August 18, 2022.”
The committee has Dr. Adekunle Akindele as chairman, Mr Niyi Owolade, Chief Mrs. Ayo Awolowo, Dr. B. Salami, Mr Adetoye Ogunboyega and Alh. Razaq Oyelani as members, while Mr Hashim Abioye will serve as the secretary.
3. Accord’s Imumolen promises to fix education sector, others
The Accord Party presidential candidate, Prof. Chris Imumolen, has promised to fix Nigeria’s education sector in six months if elected as president during next year’s election.
He added that his administration would allot about 20% of the budget to the education sector to ensure that things work and end recurrent industrial action by critical stakeholders in the sector.
The AP candidate made the pledge during a massive interactive session organized by the Professor Chris Imumolen Movement by his friends across Lagos State, according to a statement by his campaign organisation on Thursday.
According to Imumolen, the human capital of any nation remains the most vital.

4. Our leader said ransom was N2m not N4m, angry kidnappers tell Police
The kidnappers of the Onikun of lkun, Mukaila Bello, in Ondo State have expressed surprise that N4 million ransom was paid.
The five visibly angry kidnappers said their leader told them it was N2 million, and gave each of them N200,000. Meaning the leader, who is on the run, took N3 million.
The suspects, paraded at the State Police Command in Akure, include Ilyasu Lawal, 27; Mohammadu Abubakar Sidi, 26; Garuba Bature, 36; Abubakar Dangy, 20, and Mohammed Mosere, 25.
Recall that the traditional ruler, the Onikun of lkun, Mukaila Bello and others were kidnapped at about 6:30p.m., around Ago-Yeye, along Owo/Ikare Road on August 4, this year after the driver conveying them was shot in the head.
The Police Command in Anambra have arrested a four-man suspected syndicate comprising two males and two females who specialised in sex blackmail and extortion of money from their victims.
DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Awka on Thursday.
Ikenga said the gang specialised in taking nude pictures of victims and threaten to post them online unless they paid money.
The PPRO gave the names of the suspects as; Okechukwu Ogoejiofor, 36, Nonso Nwizu, 34, Esther Nwafor lfeanyichukwu, 21 and Obianuju Nduba, 20.

7. Resident doctors begin two-week warning strike in Ondo
Members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, have begun a two-week warning strike over dearth of personnel.
President of the Owo FMC ARD, Dr Olaopa Olutobi Gideon, said the strike action was inevitable as they were working ‘under dire stressful conditions.’
Olaopa said there were only 80 resident doctors and Health Officers in the employment of the hospital.
Olaopa said no employment has been carried out in the hospital since 2018.
He said the hospital used to have about 300 doctors and house officers but many of them have left the system.

9. Buhari orders action against explosive remnants in North-East
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management as well as relevant agencies to address the threats posed by explosive remnants in the North East.
The President issued the order on Thursday on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day 2022 in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Buhari affirmed government’s commitment to reducing the effect of disasters, climate change, insurgency and challenges of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The Nigerian leader said attention should be paid to emerging issues amid the return and rehabilitation of Nigerians displaced in the 13-year conflict and insurgency in the region.
The President regretted that the increasing number of orphans and widows due to the spate of insecurity.
10. Avoid acts of misconduct – New Kwara Customs boss, Bello tells officers
Aliyu Gaya Bello, new Comptroller, Kwara State Customs Command, has cautioned officers of the command against negative acts.
He warned that such acts will not be tolerated under his watch.
Bello stated this at the handover ceremony from his predecessor, H.B.Ahmed, at the Customs Command headquarters in Ilorin on Thursday.
The new boss, charged officers to imbibe the culture of transparency and professionalism while discharging their responsibilities.
He said, “We have to intensify efforts to collect maximum revenue and suppress smuggling to the barest minimum.”
Bello, who was transferred from Zone A headquarters, Lagos, said he will consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor.
