1. Atiku, Wike meet in London

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday met the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in London.

The meeting was held a few hours after former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, met the governor.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, joined Atiku at the meeting while Wike attended the meeting with his allies including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State; Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, among others.

The meeting came barely three days after Wike met with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

2. Why we suspended strike – NAAT

The National Association of Academic Technologists on Thursday said it suspended its 158-day-old strike for three months “to allow the government time to conclude negotiations and implementation of NAAT’s demands”.

The PUNCH reports that like other tertiary institution-based unions, NAAT had embarked on strike to push home its lingering demands.

But the union’s President, Ibeji Nwokoma, while addressing the press in Abuja said the suspension of the strike would last for three months.

“It is important to state that at the expiration of the three months window period, NAAT will not hesitate to resume the suspended strike action without notice if all the issues agreed upon with the Minister of Education, on behalf of the government, are not holistically addressed.

3. Abducted Enugu law school students regain freedom

The two students of the Nigerian Law School, Agbani, Enugu State Campus who were kidnapped last Wednesday have been released.

The students identified as Chukwuemeka and Festus Pedro were reportedly abducted around at Eke market in Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State around 8pm.

Sources said they went to the market to buy foodstuff before they were ambushed by the gunmen.

However, they regained their freedom eight days after their abduction.

The PUNCH could not independently ascertain whether a ransom was paid or not.

The gunmen had shortly after their kidnap demanded N50 million as ransom before they would be released.

4. Subsidy removal: FG needs to win trust of Nigerians — Trade Union Congress

Mr Festus Osifo, president, Trade Union Congress (TUC), says Nigerians are not averse to the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) but waiting for the government to win their trust over the issue.

Osifo spoke during a panel session at the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) Strategic International Conference on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the topic of the session was “Energy Transition, PIA, Petroleum Pricing and the Way Forward for the Downstream Sector.”

He noted that majority of Nigerians were not really interested in energy transition but were only concerned about affordable and reliable energy.

5. 2023: Afenifere not divided over Tinubu, says Adeyeye

Sen. Dayo Adeyeye, National Chairman, South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA), has said that Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation is not divided on its support for the presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress  (APC) Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Adeyeye made this known in a programme monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)in Abuja on Thursday.

Adeyeye said that Tinubu’s candidacy enjoys massive support of majority of Afenifere members in spite of contrary insinuations in some quarters.

“I have respect for Adebanjo. He is my leader in Afenifere. As of today, the leader of Afenifere, for clarity is Reuben Fasoranti.

6. Borno Police parades 59 criminal suspects in Maiduguri

The Borno state police command have arrested 59 suspects for abduction, rape, burglary and theft in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area.

The arrests of the suspects were made in the last two months in various parts of the metropolis and Jere Council in the state.

Parading the suspects, yesterday (Thursday), in Maiduguri, the Police Commissioner, Abdu Umar disclosed that five suspects including Nsa Hensewa, 46, were nabbed for kidnapping five people including three children.

He said that Hensewa was allergy paid N500, 000 by lady in Lagos to kidnap and transport the three children.

7. We’ll prosecute lawyers for looting conference venue, materials – NBA

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Olumide Akpata has said that any lawyer found complicit in the looting of the conference materials collection centre that went viral will be prosecuted.

“I hereby assure the generality of Nigerian legal practitioners that any lawyer found complicit in the vandalisation of conference booths, theft of phones, assault on officials will be prosecuted,” he declared.

Akpata stated this on Thursday while addressing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association in Lagos.

He explained circumstances surrounding the delay in the distribution of the conference materials, ascribing it poor quality bags which were rejected.

8. Military nabs 21 pipeline vandals, seizes stolen petroleum products in N/Delta

The Defence Headquarters said troops of Operation Delta Safe had apprehended 21 pipeline vandals and impounded N3.7 billion worth of stolen crude oil and petroleum products in two weeks.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Musa Danmadami, made this known at a bi-weekly news briefing of the Defence Headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.

Danmadami said the troops, in the conduct of operations, Octopus Grip and Operation Dakar Da Barawo, made the arrest during operational activities in creeks, villages, communities and towns.

9. FCT authority alerts of imminent floods in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has alerted residents of the FCT of imminent heavy floods in Abuja.

FEMA asked emergency workers to be ready to save lives and property in the nation’s capital.

Director-General Abbas Idriss issued a statement on Thursday through the Head of Public Affairs Nkechi Isa.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) High Impact-Based Forecast predicts heavy rainfall in the FCT on Thursday and Friday.

The forecast said there would be flash floods on roads and low lying settlements, disruption of traffic and reduction of visibility.

10. NNPC fuel subsidy: Reps summon Auditor-General over payment documents

The House of Representatives has summoned the Auditor-General of the Federation (AGF) to appear before it on Aug. 30 for an explanation of fuel subsidy payments between 2013 and 2022.

The lawmakers want the auditor-general to provide documentary evidence on the audit carried out on the monies spent on fuel subsidy by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd.

Rep. Ibrahim Aliyu, the Chairman, Special ad hoc Committee investigating the fuel subsidy, issued the notice in Abuja on Thursday.

Aliyu made this known during the scrutiny of documents submitted by the representative of the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGoF), Mr Okolieaboh Sylvia.

The AGoF was represented by the Director of Federation Accounts, Mr Mohammed Saleh.
