1. G5 comment: CJN must resign, say Northern groups
For his comment on the Peoples Democratic Party G5 group, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, should resign from office, a coalition of 52 northern groups advised on Thursday.
The organisation said the country cannot have a successful democracy without a fair and impartial judiciary.
The 52 Arewa socio-cultural groups made the demand at a briefing in Abuja, days after the CJN expressed happiness that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State aligned himself with the PDP G5 governors led by Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

4. Sack Ngige now, ASUU tells Buhari
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the immediate sack of the Minister for Labour and Productivity, accusing him of complicating the impasse between Government and ASUU.
Chairman, ASUU, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, MOUAU, Professor Chike Ugwuene, who made the demand during a rally by ASUU members at the university, accused Ngige of “Divide and rule and pro-rata payment of salaries.”
He expressed disappointment over the inability of the Minister to help resolve the lingering face-off between the union and the Federal Government.
Professor Ugwuene said that the Federal Government had no regard for lecturers, hence Government’s refusal to attend to ASUU demands.

6. Zulum asks police to arrest culprits behind political violence in Borno
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed sadness over reports of violence largely involving some supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during their recent campaigns.
Zulum, in a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesman Malam Isa Gusau, directed the Borno State’s Commissioner of Police to investigate and ensure all culprits are arrested and prosecuted.
Recall that a video which went viral indicated a clash of political thugs during Borno Central senatorial campaigns in some Council areas with burning of some make shift structures portraying PDP flags in Banki town of Bama Council Area.
Reacting Zulum said, “I have received reports on renewed acts of political violence in the state. I strongly condemn these extremely unnecessary acts of violence and hereby direct the Commissioner of Police and the DSS to immediately investigate and ensure anyone involved is made to face the full wrath of the law.”

7. Active telecom subscribers hit 212 million, says NCC
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Prof Umar Danbatta has announced that active telecom subscribers in Nigeria have grown from 400,000 in 2000 to 212.2 million as of today.
According to him, the growth represents a teledensity of 111 percent while basic internet subscriptions grew from zero to 152.7 million within the period.
Danbatta also said broadband subscriptions have grown up to 86 million representing 45.09 percent penetration as of July.
8. 18 passengers abducted in Kogi
All passengers in an 18- seater bus heading to Abuja from the eastern region were kidnapped at Ochadamu area in Ofu local government of Kogi state on Monday.
An eyewitness stated that the incident occurred around 4 pm at the notorious kidnapping spot in Ochadamu area on Anyigba -Itobe road.
The Nation learnt the hoodlums, in their numbers, flagged down the bus at gunpoint on that spot on the highway and evacuated the passengers to the bush.
