1. Buhari bars govt officials from using private emails

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, directed government officials to refrain from using private emails for official purposes.

He also ordered all Federal Public institutions to migrate their websites to the relevant government domains.

“I hereby direct that all government officials should refrain from using private emails for official purposes,” Buhari said when he launched the National Policy on Nigeria Government Second-Level Domains at the State House, Abuja.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Thursday titled ‘At the launch of two policies on the digital economy, President Buhari says diversification has been most successful in the sector.’

2. Aviation unions issue NiMet 14-day strike notice

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees have threatened to ground operations at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency over non-implementation of approved minimum wage in two weeks’ time.

This was contained in a letter sent to The PUNCH in Abuja on Thursday dated January 26, 2023, which was jointly signed by the Secretary-General, NUATE, Ocheme Aba; Secretary-General, AUPCTRE, Siriku Waheed and the Secretary-General, ANAP, Abdul Saidu, addressed to the Director-General of NiMET.

The unions, however, described the failure of NiMET to implement the minimum wage consequential adjustment despite its implementation in other five aviation agencies since February 2022 as “wickedness”.

The unions noted that the issue of the non-implementation of the approved minimum wage consequential adjustment for NiMET has reached its crescendo, adding that only NiMet staff had been denied its implementation.

3. New naira: Temporal hardship necessary for economy – FG

The Federal Government on Thursday said the harsh realities faced by citizens due to the introduction of the new naira notes by the Central Bank is a necessary price for the long-term health of the economy.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said this when fielding questions from journalists at the 65th session of the State House Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

According to Ahmed, the current hardships, though temporal, are required to stifle corruption and gradually transition into a cashless economy.

She said, “We are worried. We are not happy that citizens have to queue and struggle at ATMs to be able to get their cash. But this is a temporary situation.

4. Presidency: Southern, Middle Belt leaders endorse Peter Obi

Leaders of thoughts, elder statesmen from four of the six geo-political zones of the country, under the aegis of Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF led by South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark have  endorsed the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi as its candidate for February 25 Presidential election.

The decision was taken at the end of the extraordinary meeting of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum on Wednesday in Abuja.

The leaders of SMBLF is made up of  the Middle- Belt, Ndi- Igbo( Ohanaeze, Afenifere, Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF).

The Communique was read by the immediate past President General of the umbrella body of Ndigbo Worldwide, the Ohanaeze, Chief John Nnia Nwodo.

5. Kano Court dissolve Ganduje’s daughter’s 16-year-old marriage

An Upper Shariah Court sitting in Kano has on Thursday dissolved the 16-year-old marriage of Asiya Ganduje, daughter of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Asiya had approached the court seeking for the dissolution of marriage with her husband, Inuwa Uba on the ground that she is tired and fed up of the marital relationship which produced four children.

The Presiding Judge, Khadi Halliru Aliyu dissolved the marriage while delivering his judgment on the matter on Thursday.

Khadi Aliyu however ordered Ganduje’s daughter to return the N50,000 dowry to her husband, Uba as cost of damage.

6. FG in Uganda over direct air connectivity

Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika has led a delegation to met with the government of Kampala, Uganda to facilitate direct air connectivity between the duo countries.

According to a statement ,Thursday, in Abuja, by the Special Assistant to Nigeria’s Minister on Public Affairs, Dr James Odaudu, the meeting focused on the review of subsisting Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between both countries, which was signed in 2002 and reviewed in 2005.

It also focused on how to give the necessary administrative and technical support to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreed during the last International Civil Aviation Negotiation (ICAN) Event which held in Abuja from 5th to 9th December, 2022

7. Court orders INEC to accept LP’s candidates in 24 States

AFederal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept the candidates of the Labour Party (LP) nominated in 24 States to participate in the forthcoming elections.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in multiple judgments on Thursday, ordered INEC to accept the lists of the candidates from the 24 States either manually or through its electronic nomination portal.

The judgments were on 24 cases filed by the LP, in which he held that INEC violated sections 31, 33, and 36 of the Electoral Act 2022 in rejecting the candidates on the excuse that its nomination portal was not functioning.

Some of the affected States include Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Lagos, Kaduna, Oyo, Benue, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Ekiti, and Katsina.

Others are Bayelsa, Niger, Rivers, Sokoto, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Borno, Osun, Adamawa and Cross River.

8. My greatest regret as Foreign Affairs Minister, by Onyeama

Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama has listed the condition of living of most Nigerians fleeing abroad as his greatest regret in government.

Onyeama narrated how he had to fight for the release of some Nigerians held in prison camps in Libya.

The Minister described the situation of Nigerians held in Libya as pathetic.

He said: “If there’s one thing that I look back on with the greatest regret in my seven and a half years in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is the situation of Nigerians in foreign countries.

9. 2023: Wike ordered his loyalists, aides, Rivers LG chairmen to support Tinubu – Sekibo

The Director-General of the Atiku-Okowa Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State, Abiye Sekibo, has accused the state Governor, Nyesom Wike of ordering his loyalists and followers to support the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Sekido disclosed this while reacting to the revocation of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium for the rally of the PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar by the Rivers State government.

The state government in January approved the venue for the event scheduled to hold on February 11, but later revoked the approval.

However, Sekibo said Wike ordered all local government chairmen, his cabinet members, his aides, and executives to support Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

10. Abuja: One dead, ​19 injured in Gwarinpa building collapse

One person has been confirmed dead after today’s building collapse in Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja.

The structure collapsed at about 11am at 4th Avenue close to H-Medix with many trapped.

The three-storey building which has a basement caved in on an unspecified number of workers.

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FCT-FEMA) is coordinating the response.

In an update Thursday evening, the agency confirmed more than a dozen have been evacuated.
