1. BVAS will retire fraudulent politicians – Osun REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has said the use of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System for the 2023 polls would retire many fraudulent politicians.

Agboke in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Thursday in Osogbo, also declared that BVAS was not only reliable but could not be manipulated through human influence.

He also declared the readiness of the commission to conduct a credible election in the state, adding that security has been beefed up in all INEC’s local government offices across the state.

Speaking further on BVAS, Agboke said, “BVAS is 101 percent reliable. There is no human influence or interference that can manipulate it. If anybody wants to do any fraud, then he would have to abandon BVAS and think of something else to do.

2. LP can’t produce president – Accord’s Imumolen

Accord party’s presidential candidate, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, has ruled out the possibility of the Labour Party producing the successor of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

He said though the LP presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, remain a good man, he had chosen the “wrong party” to actualise his dream.

Imumolen said this while justifying his earlier comments that he would appoint some presidential candidates, including Obi as cabinet members if he becomes Nigeria’s president next month.

“The reactions which have trailed my recent statements on Tinubu and Obi, good or bad, now make it imperative that I should throw more light on why I said both personalities who are also my co-aspirants in the ongoing presidential race will work with me in the task of salvaging Nigeria from the abyss of stagnation and underdevelopment if I become president.

3. MSSN sets target for new NDIC appointees

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, has congratulated AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef and other newly appointed members of the reconstituted board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and charged them to deliver exceedingly.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), had on Monday approved the reconstitution of the NDIC and approved the appointment of some new members and the reappointment of some existing members to the board.

The new appointees are Dr. Abdulhakeem Mobolaji Abdullateef, (Chairman) from South-West Zone; Prof. Osita Ogbu, from South-East Zone; Umar Gambo Jibrin from North-Central Zone; Mohammed Attahiru Haruna from North-East Zone; Yasmin Zabath Dalhatu from North-West zone; Simon Ogie from South-South Zone; Abimbola Olashore South-West Zone.

The Amir (President) of MSSNLagos, Miftahudeen Thanni, charged the newly appointed board members to justify their appointments.

4. Peter Obi will win on first ballot – Dele Farotimi 

A seasoned political activist and Obi/Datti campaign spokesperson, South-West, Dele Farotimi said the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi will win the 2023 presidential election on the first ballot.

Farotimi stated this while speaking in an interview with Politics Hub, a Vanguard Online TV’s political show on Tuesday.

The social rights activist, in the course of the interview, told the anchor of the TV show, Damilola Ogunsakin that the 2023 elections have caught the attention of Nigerians in a way that it has never arrested their attention before.

He said, “This time around the people are engaged. They see that elections have consequences and they are involved in getting involved in the process because President Muhammadu Buhari has taught everybody.”

5. We’ll punish banks hoarding new naira notes  – CBN vows

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has vowed to sanction any commercial bank hoarding the new naira notes from the public.

According to CBN, from Thursday (today), monitoring of commercial banks will commence, in order to know those who are not giving the new naira notes to customers.

The branch Controller of Awka CBN, Anambra State, Mr. Benedict Maduagwu, disclose this during a sensitization programme to traders at the main market, Onitsha, Anambra State on Thursday.

He said, “As from today, the CBN will be sanctioning any commercial bank that is not dispensing new notes to the public.

6. Why we extended deadline for PVCs collection – INEC

Impressed by the increasing interest shown by registered voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards PVCs, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has extended the deadline for the collection of the cards.

INEC has also vowed to punish any staff found to have extorted or discriminated against any registered voter in the issuance of the PVCs.

National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee at the commission, Barr. Festus Okoye disclosed this in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja.

He said the decision was a fallout of Thursday’s regular meeting wherein the Commission deliberated on a number of issues, including the ongoing collection of PVCs nationwide.

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party(LP) Peter Obi said that Nigeria will boom again, stressing that the power he seeks is to enable him secure and unite the country.

Obi assured that if voted to power, he will lead a country that will be the pride of every Nigerian.

Speaking at a presidential campaign rally at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, the LP presidential candidate said it was time to remove from the country a corrupt structure that has given it a bad name, enthroned hunger, starvation, bad governance, poverty and loss of confidence and the mad rush for greener pastures.

He said that his desire was to enthrone a new order that would serve the interest of Nigerians.

8. Elon Musk breaks Guinness world record for ‘largest loss of personal fortune’

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has claimed the Guinness World Records title for the “largest loss of personal fortune.”

According to Forbes, Elon recorded a $180 billion loss as his estimated net worth declined by 57% from $320 billion in Nov. 2021 to $137 billion on Jan. 3.

Bloomberg previously reported in December that the Tesla boss’ net worth had dipped $200 billion from November 2022, making him the first person to have suffered such a loss from his net worth.

Musk’s setting a new record for the “largest loss of personal fortune” comes not long after he slid to second position on Forbes’ real-time billionaires’ list.

9. Nigerian government profiles 3000 terrorism cases, prosecutes 1500

The Nigerian government has profiled 3,000 cases of terrorism through the Ministry of Justice.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) gave the fugue on Thursday.

He made a presentation at the 17th Edition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration Scorecard Series.

“3,000 terrorism cases have been profiled to date out of which over 1,500 cases were prosecuted, with 397 convictions realised”, he said.

Malami disclosed 7,000 cases of maritime attacks, armed robbery, vandalisation of equipment and pipelines, financial matters, cybercrime, kidnapping and anti-corruption have been prosecuted.

10. Champions League: I’m not counting on Mane – Bayern Munich coach, Julian Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann, has provided an update on forward Sadio Mane’s fitness ahead of his side’s UEFA Champions League last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain on February 14.

Recall that Mane suffered an injury ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.
