1. Fire destroys N1.6m goods in Kwara
No less than N1.6 million worth of goods were, on Thursday, destroyed during a fire incident at an electronics and furniture shop in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Kwara Fire Service Spokesman, Hassan Adekunle, in a statement posted on the Service’s social media handle, said other goods worth N1.6 billion were, however, safely recovered during a rescue operation.
The statement read, “This morning, July 14, 2022, at about 07:49 am, one Mr. Toyosi from Taiwo Area quickly summoned the Kwara State Fire Service to a fire incident at Pillar Mega Show Room (Major dealer in electronics and furniture), situated at 72, Taiwo Road, in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“We eliminated the ravaging fire on time and saved the mega shopping store from destruction,” the leading officer said.
2. Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana, dies at 73
Ivana Trump, the first wife of the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, and mother of his three eldest children, has died at the age of 73.
Ivana Trump “passed away at her home in New York City,” Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social on Thursday, without providing the cause of death.
“She was a wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life,” said Donald Trump, 76.
“Her pride and joy were her three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric. She was so proud of them, as we were all so proud of her. Rest In Peace, Ivana!” he added in the post.
3. Kuje: 421 escapees recaptured, 454 still at large
The Nigerian Correctional Service has recaptured 421 inmates who fled the custody facility in Kuje, Abuja, with 454 are still at large, according to the House of Representatives’ Committee on Correctional Service.
This is just as the committee said it had summoned the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; and Comptroller-General of the NCoS, Haliru Nababa, to appear before it over the recent attack on the Kuje Custodial Centre by terrorists.
The committee also invited the Commander of the Nigerian Army Platoon on duty on the night of the attack.
Chairman of the committee on Correctional Service, Edwin Anayo, who disclosed this during an oversight visit to the facility on Thursday, said the lawmakers met 115 inmates.

4. Man bags triple life imprisonment for defiling, raping daughters
An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, on Thursday, sentenced a man, Michake Ogbar, to life imprisonment for defiling and raping his three daughters aged 10 years, 20 years and 24 years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Abiola Soladoye held that prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the charge of defilement and rape brought against Ogbar.
“Evidence before the court shows that the prosecution has proved the case of defilement and rape before this court.
“The defendant, who is the father of the three daughters, is found guilty as charged, as the burden of proof has been discharged.
5. INEC moves sensitive materials to LGAs ahead Osun election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved sensitive material to all the INEC offices in the 30 local government areas of Osun state ahead Saturday Osun governorship poll.
The officials of the commission moved the materials under heavy security to all the local government around between 7pm and 9:30pm on Thursday at the headquarters of INEC situated along Gbongan/Osogbo road.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Abdulganiy Raji, while handing out the materials, said the electoral officers would take the items to their councils where they would be sent to the polling units on Saturday morning.
He added that the move is to ensure efficient dispatch of the items to the polling units on Saturday.
6. Police foil attempted bank robbery in Umuahia
A crack team of anti-robbery police squad from the Abia Command Thursday foiled an alleged attempt to rob an old generation bank in Umuahia.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident to newsmen.
Ogbonna said that the command got the information that there was an attempt to rob a bank situated on Bank Road in the capital city.
He said that the command “immediately dispatched an anti-robbery squad to the scene and they succeeded in foiling the robbery attempt”.

7. UPDATED: Court declines sacking Gov Oyetola as Osun APC’s candidate
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by former Secretary to the Osun State Government, Moshood Adeoti, seeking to void the nomination of Governor Gboyega Oyetola as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the July 16 governorship election.
Adeoti had claimed that Oyetola breached the provision of Article 31 (3) of the APC construction by allegedly not resigning his membership of the Caretaker/Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) at least 30 days before the party’s primary won by Oyetola.
In a judgment on Thursday, Justice Inyang Ekwo upheld the objections raised by the APC and Oyetola against the suit’s competence.
Justice Ekwo held among others, that the suit was an abuse of court process because it disclosed no reasonable cause of action against the defendants.
Defendants in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/203/2022 are the APC, Oyetola and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
8. Southsouth clerics back Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate
The Network of Clergymen in Nigeria (NCMN) Southsouth zone has backed the nomination of former Borno Governor Kashim Shettima as running mate to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
The group, through its Coordinator, Pastor Joseph Francis and deputy, Apostle Odion Ebodaghe threw their weight behind the ticket in Benin.
It described Tinubu’s aspiration to be President in 2023 as divine, which would move the nation forward.
NCMN said: “That divine mandate is not complete yet until Asiwaju Tinubu enters Aso Rock as the President of Nigeria in 2023.

9. Go and beg Wike – Adeyanju to PDP leaders
An activist, Deji Adeyenju, has appealed to leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to go and beg the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.
According to Adeyanju, the PDP has failed to be fair to Wike in spite of his loyalty to the opposition party.
He explained that the Rivers governor remains the most loyal chieftain of the PDP since 2015.
While alluding to the fact that the “governor’s excesses” might be to the extreme, Adeyanju insisted that Wike deserves to be respected by all stakeholders.
He maintained that the absence of the PDP governor at the party’s rally ahead of Saturday’s Osun governorship election was too conspicuous.
