The Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch, Cross River State, has decried Governor Ben Ayade’s directive to the Nigerian Army to sustain the military operation in Nko community.
A statement signed by the branch Chairman, Attah Ochinke, and Secretary, Eno Edet, said “The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch, has been drawn to the directive issued to the Nigerian Army by the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Ben Ayade, in respect of the army’s operations currently being conducted in Nko and Oyadama communities.
“In a press statement issued by his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, the governor ordered the sustenance of army operation in Nko community until those behind the shooting of six military personnel are produced or fished out.
“While we join the governor in condemning the embarrassing and seemingly intractable communal clashes between these neighbouring communities, we view the directive of the governor to the army to sustain its operations in Nko community as appalling and ill-advised.

A former Senator, who represented Ebonyi Central Zone in the Senate, Emmanuel Onwe, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Federal Investigation Bureau, and the Department of States Services to, as a matter of urgency, swing into action to unravel alleged contract fraud involving a company, Express Concerns International Limited, and one Chief Onny Igbokwe, an Abuja-based contractor.
This was as Senator Onwe alleged that Igbokwe opted to drag him and the company in the mud when his attempt to allegedly syphon and steal the mobilisation fund meant for the execution of the contract, blew up and was foiled.
It was gathered that Igbokwe, had through his lawyers, Kanu Ogbonnia and Co, allegedly petitioned the Presidential Amnesty Programme; the Federal Ministry of Justice, among others, claiming that the senator and the company were involved in an illegal N500 million deal.
According to the alleged petition, dated June 10, 2022, a copy of which was sighted by The PUNCH, Igbokwe claimed he was the founding father of the Presidential Amnesty Training contract programme.
But during an interaction with journalists in Abakaliki, on Thursday, Onwe, who is the Director of the Agric Division of Express Concerns International Ltd, alleged that Igbokwe became aggrieved because he scuttled his criminal efforts to steal the 30 per cent mobilisation fund, for a project meant to train Niger Delta youths.
Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, Thursday, at Government Day Secondary School, Kofar Yandaka, flagged off the disbursement of School Improvement Grant (SIG) to the tune of N2.1billion (N2,113,180,000) to Junior and Senior Secondary Schools across the State under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project.
Speaking at the flag-off, Governor Masari said the funds shall be disbursed in two tranches to each school after reaching progress level and certification by the technical monitors.
According to Masari, “the AGILE project, like other sister projects in the state is being implemented after fulfilment of certain conditions as agreed between the state and the World Bank. It is a project for Katsina State.
“The project was earlier designed as a result of the report of Annual School Census of the year 2018/2019 which shows a large percentage of our children who graduates from Primary and Junior Secondary Schools and do not transit to the next level of education.
The fate of the governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State, Professor Uche Ikonne, appears to be hanging in the balance as an Abia State High Court sitting in Aba has reversed itself on its earlier order which recognised the three-man Ad hoc delegates list that produced them.
One Akuoma Friday, had on May 16, 2022, approached the court, urging it to vacate its earlier order.
After due consideration of the suit, the court, presided over by Justice C.U. Okoroafor, yesterday, averred that it erred in law to have granted its earlier order.
Justice Okorafor explained that the new National Judicial Council guideline had stripped the court of the jurisdiction to entertain such matter.
The European Commission, on Thursday, said mobile phone users in the EU will beable to call, text, and surf the internet within the bloc at no additional cost until at least 2032.

About 10,000 remaining Nigerian pilgrims billed to perform this year’s Hajj would be airlifted on or before Monday to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it was learnt on Thursday.
The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Zikrullah Hassan, disclosed this during an interactive session with the media in his office in Abuja.
Hassan said that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that no registered pilgrim is left out of this year’s Hajj exercise.
He said over 20,000 Nigerian pilgrims are already in Saudi Arabia, adding that some airlines involved in the airlift have added additional aircraft to make the airlift seamless.
The Elders’ Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osun State, pioneered by the first interim chairman of the party and former governor, Chief Bisi Akande has said the reelection of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has been ordained by God.

Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Baba Tela, has debunked reports that he resigned his position.
Tela made this known in a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Sani Mu’azu Ilelah.
He described the viral social media report making the rounds as a figment of the imagination of the author.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we would like to assure the peace loving and hard-working people of Bauchi State, in particular and the nation in general, that Sen. Baba Tela has not resigned as the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State.
“His Excellency, the deputy Governor, remains committed to the objectives and ideas of the Government of Bauchi State under the able leadership of His Excellency, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON (Kauran Bauchi),” the statement said.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), says it will embark on one-day nationwide protest to compel the Federal Government to find immediate resolutions to contending issues with education sector unions.
The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, who stated this during the opening of the Congress’ Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Thursday in Abuja, said the move was to call the attention of the Federal Government to resolve the lingering issues immediately.
Wabba expressed sadness over the closure of the country’s tertiary institutions due to unresolved labour disputes between the Federal Government and unions in education.
NAN reports that while the Federal Government continues to work on the demands of the unions, academic activities across all public universities, polytechnics and colleges of Education have been suspended.
