1. ASUU strike: Cancel planned protest, FG begs NLC
The Federal Government has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress to cancel its planned protest over the prolonged strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-based unions.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made the appeal on Thursday at a meeting with the leadership of the NLC in his office.
Also in attendance at the meeting were the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kachollom Daju.
Ngige in his speech, updated the labour leaders on the efforts so far made by the Federal Government to resolve the impasse in the university system, saying that efforts were still ongoing.
2. Osun: Edwin Clark commends Buhari, berates APC chairman
Elder statesman and leader of the South-South geopolitical zone, Chief Edwin Clark, has congratulated the People’s Democratic Party and its Osun State governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke, on their victory in the governorship election held on July 16.
While commending the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for describing the outcome of the elections as “an expression of the will of the people through ballot, which must matter and be respected”, the nonagenarian berated the All Progressives Congress national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, for his comments before the election and desperation to get Osun State by hook or crook.
Clark in a statement issued on Thursday night in Abuja, recalled his encounter with the APC chairman who, according to him, he had known since 1979 as national coordinator for the minorities of the South and the Middle Belt.
3. We must tackle climate change – Environmentalist
An environmentalist, Banke Oniru, Thursday, highlighted ways by which Nigerians can join the rest of the world in tackling climate change.
Oniru, who decries the havoc that climate change is causing on the earth, notes in a statement that the “earth is dying” adding that she is passionate about what humans must do to save the planet.
The PUNCH reports that countries in Europe have recently been experiencing wildfires and heatwaves as a result of increasing temperature, which reached 40 degrees in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, for the first time in history.
In France, towns and cities in the country’s west registered their highest-ever temperatures Monday, the national weather office said.

4. Osun Govt, Adeleke trade words over alleged looting
The Osun Government says the claim by the Governor-elect, Sen. Ademola Adeleke and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the state government officials were diverting and looting government assets and property, is not true.
Adeleke had, in a statement by his Spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, warned Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola and his allies against diversion and looting of the government’s assets and public properties.
According to Adeleke, some government functionaries and appointees of the governor are converting the public assets to private use.
“We have it on good authority that Osun State assets within the state, Kogi, Lagos, Abuja and outside the shore of the country, are being tampered with for private acquisition.
5. NYSC only surviving FG project uniting Nigeria — Katsina Emir
The Emir of katsina, Alhaji Dr Abdulmumimi Usman Kabir has observed that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was the only surviving Federal Government Project among so many that were established between 1970 to 1990.
Emir Kabir made the observation on Wednesday, 20th July, 2022 when the State Coordinator NYSC katsina state Hajiya Muhammad Aisha paid a courtesy call on the Emir in his palace
The Katsina monarch called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to continue to support the NYSC Scheme, noting that it is the only project that brings in national unity and integration.
He disclosed that while serving under the scheme in Sokoto as a Youth Corps member in the 80s, he served with dedication and selflessness, unlike what is happening today.
6. Again, Police intercept explosive devices in Kano
The Kano State Police Command on Thursday said it has intercepted another explosive devices conveyed in a Mercedes Benz vehicle along Chiranchi Dorayi Quarters in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko disclosed this while displaying the recovered arms and ammunitions and also parading kidnappers along side other criminals arrested for various crimes in the state
CP Dikko said the occupants of the vehicle conveying the explosive devices were stopped by his men for search but in the process opened fire on the operatives, abandoned the vehicle and fled.

7. Ex-AGF, three others face trial for alleged N109b fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said a former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris will on Friday face trial for alleged N109billion fraud.
Idris is expected to be arraigned on 14 counts with three other suspects namely Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.
A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren said the suspects will be tried by Justice A.O. Adeyemi Ajayi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja.
The statement said: “He is to be docked alongside three others: Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited on a 14 count charge of stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109, 485,572,691.9
8. ASUU strike: Students, parents in dilemma over rent renewal
It is no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike since February 14 to make Federal Government accede to its demands.
Chief among the issues, which caused the face-off with the Federal Government, is the refusal of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to deploy the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), a payment system presented by the union as a replacement for the government’s controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), among others.
Despite President Buhari’s appeal to the union to sheathe its sword and return to their classrooms in the interest of “our students and the country,” the union reiterated that it would call off the strike only if government approves its two principal demands — accept UTAS and the renegotiated 2009 agreement.
On Tuesday, the President also directed the Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu to proffer solution to the strike in two weeks.

9. Police bust Yan daba boys, other criminals in Kano
The Police in Kano arrested 198 suspected criminals in the state between June 27 and July 20.
Commissioner of Police, Samaila Dikko, made this known at a press conference on Thursday.
The police chief said 42 of the suspects were nabbed for armed robbery, nine for kidnapping, 16 fraudsters and 27 for cars and tricycles theft.
Other suspects included 12 for drug dealing, and 92 thugs popularly called “Yan daba”.
10. Buhari consoles Gombe gov over sister’s death
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday condoled with Governor Inuwa Yahaya.
The Gombe helmsman lost his younger sister, Hajiya Aishatu Umaru to the cold hands of death.
Buhari said A’ishatu made noteworthy contributions to further social empowerment in her community.
The Nigerian leader said she will be remembered by many people in the state.
