1. Sanwo-Olu suspends Lagos abortion guidelines

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the suspension of the “State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications” issued by the Directorate of Family Health and Nutrition in the Ministry of Health.

This was contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, titled, “Retraction on guidelines relating to safe termination of pregnancy for medical reasons in Lagos State’.

Sanwo-Olu said that the new guidelines would not be implemented until adequate deliberation.

The governor added that the suspension would also allow for adequate public sensitisation and stakeholder engagement to reach a consensus required for successful guideline development.

2. Kuje prison attack, sign of Nigeria’s security architecture failure -Lawan

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has said Tuesday’s attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre by terrorists speaks volumes about the failure of the country’s security architecture.

Lawan who led a delegation of the leadership of the Senate on Thursday to assess the level of attack on the correctional facility by insurgents faulted the Nigerian Correctional Service for not providing Closed Circuit Television cameras at the Kuje correctional facility and others across the country.

Speaking after an assessment of the correctional facility, Lawan said, “The attack on this correctional facility is symptomatic of the failure of security architecture. The attack is only a culmination of the failure of security systems.

“We were told that an estimated 300 terrorists attacked this facility. They came on foot, and I believe they should have been detected.

3. Only 84,803 of Nigeria’s 3.2 million refugees are registered- FG

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, on Thursday, revealed that it has registered only 84,803 (2 per cent) of the existing 3.2 million internally displaced persons scattered nationwide.

This was as it said Borno State tops the ranks of regions with the highest number of IDPs, numbering 1.6 million, while Ekiti state has 5,377.

The NCFRMI’s Federal Commissioner, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, disclosed this at the 42nd Session of the State House Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team.

She said “According to the UNHCR matrix index, we have 3.2 million IDPs in Nigeria. And under the Progress V4 platform which is to capture and profile Refugees Data, which we run with the UNHCR, we have been able to register 84,803 refugees in Nigeria.

4. Police arrest 14 suspected criminals in Jigawa

The Police Command in Jigawa has arrested 14 suspected criminals during raids on black spots in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Thursday.

Shiisu said the suspects, aged between 18 and 52, were arrested in Sara and Old Gwaram town on June 6, at about 2:00 p.m.

He said the police arrested the suspects when its operatives raided black spots and hideouts for criminals in the affected areas.

5. Peter Obi, others watch as Most Rev Antonio Filipazz ordains Bakeni as first indigenous Bishop of Maiduguri

Dozens of Catholic Bishops and Archbishops from within and outside the country, including prominent individuals on Thursday attended the official consecration of Most Rev. John Bogna Bakeni as the Auxiliary Bishop of Maiduguri Catholic Diocese in Borno state.

Also in attendance was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and former governor of Anambra  State, Mr. Peter Obi. Although he declined to speak to the press, Vanguard gathered that he was in Maiduguri purposely to grace the Ordination.

The Episcopal Ordination was also attended by Bishops of Enugu, Onitcha, Keffi, Panshin, Jalingo, Yola, Bauchi, Jos Dioceses among others.

Bakeni is a native of Shani Local Government Area and first indigenous Bishop from Borno State.

6. UN, North-East states strategizes on implementation of food systems transformation

The United Nations (UN) in collaboration with Federal Government; has strategized to implement the Food Systems Transformation (FST) pathways in the Northeast.

The strategic pathways; are to increase food production, storage and distribution” in the region, comprising Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

Declaring the two-day sensitization workshop on UN food system, yesterday (Thursday), in Maiduguri, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state, disclosed that the transformation could  overcome the various socio-economic crisis including poverty, unemployment and climate change.

Zulum, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Hussaini Marte said that the ambitions about the national food system pathways could reduce poverty among smallholder farmers.

Besides, he added that men and youths can have greater access to food production for increased incomes and assets.

7. We lost an illustrious son in Barkindo – Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the death of Mohammed Barkindo, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as a loss of an illustrious son.

He expressed sadness over the demise of the OPEC Chief in a statement on Thursday in Abuja from his Media Office.

The APC standard bearer note the sudden death of the global oil chief at a time the country was preparing to celebrate his monumental achievements in OPEC ahead of the end of his second tenure in July is heartbreaking.

The statement reads: “Nigeria just lost an illustrious son and an outstanding professional in the global oil industry.

8. Dele Momodu accused me of phone theft in 2007, says Davido’s aide

Davido’s personal logistics manager, Isreal Afeare aka Israel DMW has narrated how he was accused by a former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu of phone theft.

In a series of videos shared by the Afrobeats singer via his Insta stories, the aide was captured recounting the incident to his boss and others in the sitting room who kept laughing as he spoke.

According to Israel, he met Momodu at the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote in 2007 where his phone got missing.

He said they flew in the same plane to Lagos and on arrival, Momodu asked him to get into his car and took him somewhere private to search him. When the 62-year-old businessman didn’t find the phone on him, Israel noted he was given N2,000 with an apology.

9. 2023: Express your commitment to tackle insecurity, get our support – Zamfara APC tells Tinubu

The Zamfara state All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders have told the Presidential candidate of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to express his commitment to tackle insecurity in the state before they can pledge their support.

The stakeholders made this known in a statement issued Thursday by the APC Zonal Publicity Secretary, North West, Malam Musa Mada.

They assured they would only support and deliver the state in the 2023 elections if Tinubu promised to tackle insecurity in the state.

According to the statement, “As the fact-finding tour of the North West Zonal officials of All Progressives Congress reached Zamfara on Wednesday, the stakeholders of the party in the State assured the Zonal Chairman, Malam Salihu Lukman and his team that they have unflinching loyalty to the party in whatever course and they are united in all fronts to give the party the required result necessary to claim the state in totality.

10. War: Russia bombards Snake Island over Ukraine’s flag

A Russian aircraft has attacked Snake Island some hours after Ukraine mounted its flag.

Both the Russian Defense Ministry and the Ukrainian armed forces confirmed the attack.

“At dawn, during an aerial overflight and reconnaissance of Zmiiny (Snake) island, it was attacked by 2 air-launched missiles. The dock was significantly damaged,” the Ukrainian military said.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated, according to the state news agency RIA Novosti: “Against the backdrop of military failures and a massive retreat of Ukrainian troops in the Donbas, the Kyiv regime made an attempt to symbolically deliver the flag to Snake Island tonight.
