1. Osun 2022: APC destroying Adeleke’s billboards, PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of destroying billboards belonging to its candidate in the July 16 governorship poll, Senator Ademola Adeleke, across the state.

A statement on Thursday by the Chairman, Osun PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr. Akindele Adekunle, said Adeleke’s campaign billboards were destroyed in many parts of Osogbo and other parts of the state, describing the development as barbaric and plot to cause a political crisis.

The statement read in parts, “Let us, for the purpose of emphasis, warn those behind this plot that they will be matched, not necessarily by an equal measure of violence but by whatever it takes legally to resist such attempt as to intimidate the good people of Osun State or coerce them into submission.

“This will mean that we will not hesitate to mobilise Osun people against the violence that is being promoted by the ruling All Progressives Congress.

2. June 12: FG has done enough for Abiola, says Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Thursday, said the Federal Government had done enough to honour the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola.

He also said that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), would address the nation through a live broadcast on Sunday, June 12, 2022, by 7:00 am to mark Democracy Day.

Buhari had in 2018, directed that Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which was hitherto marked every May 29, be shifted to June 12 in honour of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The President had also honoured Abiola with a posthumous award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic.

3. Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 2-1 without fans in Abuja

Super Eagles defeated Leone Stars of Sierra Leone 2-1 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja without fans in the stands on Thursday in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations encounter.

The fans were absent as a result of the one-match ban placed on the country by the world football–governing body, FIFA, over the fracas that followed the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff round against the Black Stars of Ghana in March.

In the Day 1 game of the 2023 AFCON, Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen scored for Nigeria while J. Morsay scored for the visitors.

Four days later, Nigeria will tackle ‘The Falcons and True Parrots’of São Tomé and Príncipe at the 45,000 –capacity Grand Stade de Agadir in southern Morocco.

4. Stepping-up: Tunde Bakare excited days after zero vote at APC primaries

Despite recording zero votes at the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC presidential primary in Abuja, the serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Church Pastor Tunde Bakare expressed excitement for staying true to his beliefs at the political contest.

The articulate pastor, who commended himself, noted that his bravery and steadfastness indicated that he had passed the test of character and courage by not buying votes at the APC primary.

Bakare, in a statement on Thursday, Bakare said he spoke the truth in the midst of wolves.

He said, “I am happy that I have passed the test of character by not paying any delegate.

5. 2023: Jonathan congratulates Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, other party flag bearers

Former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has congratulated presidential election flag bearers of various political parties particularly Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples democratic Party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All peoples Congress, Peter Obi of the Labour Party  as well as others for the emergence at the conclusion of party primaries, urging them to run a campaign devoid of rancor and divisiveness and utilize the opportunity to promote peace and unity.

Jonathan commended the candidates for their interest in leading the country which he described as  a demonstration of their commitment and belief in the progress of the nation.

Noting that  Nigeria is at a critical junction in its march to nationhood as it grapples with security and economic challenges, Dr. Jonathan stated that the 2023 elections present an opportunity to renew the dreams of our founding fathers and revitalise our economy.

He however charged the candidates to, in their campaigns, eschew violence and acts that could encourage any form of bloodletting or exacerbate the national fault lines, noting that it is the responsibility of all political leaders to strive to de-escalate the tension in the country.

6. APC Convention: Southern, Middle Belt Leaders hail Buhari, congratulate Tinubu

LEADERS  of thoughts, elder statesmen from four of the six geo-political zones of the country, under the aegis of Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, SMBLF have hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for staying true to his promise of non-interference in the process of electing the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The SMBLF in a statement yesterday have also congratulated the National Leader of the APC and former Lagos State Governor,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on his emergence as the Presidential candidate of the party ahead of 2023 Presidential poll, just as they have reiterated their call on the people of Southern Nigeria, the Middle Belt region and all well-meaning Nigerians to, as a hallowed responsibility to the nation, vote for only southern Presidential candidates in the 2023 election, in the national interest.

The  leaders of South South, Afenifere, Middle- Belt, Ndi- Igbo( Ohaneaze, Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF who commended Buhari and the APC on the emergence of Tinubu,  but said however that they had preferred the Presidential ticket to go to the South-East zone of the country.

The statement signed yesterday by  Amb. Okey Emuchay for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide; Comrade Jare Ajayi for Afenifere; Dr. Isuwa Dogo for Middle Belt Forum (MBF) and Hon. Ken Robinson for PANDEF/Acting Coordinator, SMBLF said that they are impressed by what they described as  the nationalistic essence demonstrated by the APC Governors and political leaders of the Northern States.

7. 140 suspected Yahoo Boys arrested in two Lagos hotels

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 140 suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo Boys”, at two hotels in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The anti-graft agency’s Head, Media & Publicity Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspects, between 16 and 42 years, were nabbed in separate sting operations at Lakers Lounge Hotel and Bar and De Butlers Hotel in Ikorodu.

Uwujaren said this followed credible intelligence on their alleged involvement in internet-related fraud.

8. NDLEA arrests 666 suspects for alleged drug trafficking in Borno

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested no fewer than 666 suspects for alleged drug trafficking in Borno between 2021 and June 2022.

The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Joseph Icha, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Thursday.

Icha said that in 2021, the agency arrested 561 suspects, comprising 553 males and eight females, while in the first quarter of 2022, 113 persons were arrested for various drug offences.

He explained that large quantities of drugs ranging from cannabis sativa, Cocaine, heroine, tramadol, Rohypnol and Diazepam, among other substances, were recovered from the suspects.

9. 2023 APC ticket: Tinubu’s antecedents make his victory unique – Zulum

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Thursday, congratulated All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Zulum also saluted President Muhammadu Buhari, APC national leaders and stakeholders for the successful conduct of the primaries.

“Asiwaju’s antecedents as a freedom fighter for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria, which culminated into his founding role in the APC’s formation, makes his choice very unique for our party”, his statement reads.

Zulum said the ex-Lagos Governor has many attributes, including “exceptional wisdom in identifying, nurturing and assembling talented persons regardless of their ethnic and religious identities”.

10. Ekiti election: Makinde, Wike, others appointed into PDP campaign council

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has constituted its National Campaign Council for the Ekiti State governorship poll.

The election will be held on Saturday June 18, 2022.

The PDP named Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde as the council chairman.

National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba said Abia Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu will serve as his deputy.

The spokesman’s statement on Thursday listed Adedamola Adegbite as the administrative secretary.

Council members are Governors Nyesom Wike, Udom Emmanuel, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, among others.
