1. Protesters demand justice for Lagos teacher accused of child abuse

Educators, parents and former students protested in the Ikeja area of Lagos State over a teacher, Olawale Bakare, who was remanded in Kirikiri Maximum prison for alleged sexual abuse of a nine-year-old girl.

The protesters, who were armed with placards, marched from the Nigeria Bar Association’s office in Ikeja to the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command.

Among the inscriptions on their placards are ‘say no to weaponised rape accusations’, ‘Lagos State, we say no to statistics, yes to justice’, ‘False accusation is a crime’, ‘rape is not a joke, do not accuse people to score a point’, and ‘rescue the Arewa girl’.

The PUNCH gathered that Bakare had been remanded in Kirikiri prison pending Lagos State’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ advice.

2. Kukah demands justice, says murder of Sokoto student criminal

The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, on Thursday, described as criminal, the gruesome murder of Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, North-West Nigeria.

The revered cleric, in a statement, tasked authorities at all levels to fish out the perpetrators and ensure justice is served on the matter.

The female student was mauled, killed and burnt on Thursday by a mob of Muslim youths who accused her of blasphemy on social media against Prophet Muhammad.

The young lady’s killers posted videos of their action on social media attracting wild spread outrage and condemnation.

The police in Sokoto said two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the student’s killing.

3. Again, naira depreciates against dollar at N420

The naira, on Thursday, depreciated further at the Investors and Exporters Window, exchanging at N420 to the dollar, a 0.30 per cent depreciation, weaker than N418.75 traded on Wednesday.

The open indicative rate closed at N416.50 to the dollar on Thursday.

An exchange rate of N444.00 to the dollar was the highest rate recorded within the day’s trading before it settled at N420.

4. Police, widow of killed tricycle operator trade words over his death

THE Anambra State Police command and the widow of a late tricycle operator in Awka, Mr. Dubem Okonkwo are trading blames following the death of Okonkwo shortly after he was paraded as one of the suspects that allegedly killed two policemen in the state.

While Okonkwo’s widow, Ebere, alleged that the police killed her  husband in detention, the police command, although not admitting that Okonkwo was killed, linked the death of the two policemen to a gang he belonged to.

Sobbing uncontrollably yesterday, Ebere said her husband was paraded a week ago by the state police command and detained, only to die shortly after.

5. EFCC nabs YahooYahoo Academy owner, 16 ‘trainees’ in Abuja

Operatives of the Abuja Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested one Afolabi Samad, owner of a Yahoo Yahoo Academy in Abuja.

The 24-year-old was arrested in a sting operation on Thursday alongside 16 of his students.

The youngsters between the ages of 18 and 27 years, were arrested at their hideout located in Peace Court Estate, Lokogoma, a suburb of Abuja.

The owner of the alleged ‘Academy’ reportedly rented the 3-bedroom flat for N3 million to impact the tricks of cyber-frauds on his apprentices for undisclosed fees.

6. 17,727 victims of trafficking rescued, rehabilitated since 2003 — NAPTIP Boss

THE Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi, yesterday said the agency has, since its inception in 2003, rescued, sheltered and rehabilitated at least 17,727 victims of human trafficking.

Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi, stated this when she featured at the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

She further disclosed that females constitute an overwhelming majority of the victims accounting for about 13,026.

7. APC ticket: El-Rufai, Kaduna delegates endorse Tinubu

Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai and delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have endorsed National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the party’s presidential ticket.

The delegates, led by el-Rufai, gave their voice votes in support of Tinubu, noting they would give him total support as the first aspirant to approach them for votes.

el-Rufai said the people being addressed are all statutory delegates from where Kaduna’s 69 delegates to the national convention will be chosen on Tuesday.

8. Outrage over killing of female student in Sokoto for alleged blasphemy

Nigerians have expressed outrage over the killing of a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education(SSCOE) for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammed.

The Nation reports a mob on Thursday killed a female student identified as Deborah over alleged blasphemy at the institution in Sokoto.

Deborah, who was killed in the premises of the College, was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), during a hot argument with fellow students.

9. Deborah Samuel: Cancel lawyers’ conference in Sokoto – Adegboruwa to NBA

Vocal legal practitioner, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has condemned the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel.

The 200 level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State was burnt alive on Thursday.

The deceased was accused of blasphemy against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Police have arrested two suspects.

Adegboruwa advised the Nigerian Bar Association – Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) to cancel its conference to be held in Sokoto.

In a statement, he urged the body not to hold the event in the state “where a Nigerian citizen has been brutally murdered and burnt to death”.

10. Deborah Samuel: Ezekwesili, Aisha react to killing of student over blasphemy

A former Minister of Education, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili and popular sociopolitical activist, Aisha Yesufu, has condemned the killing of a christian student in Sokoto State, identified as Deborah Samuel.

DAILY POST had reported that Deborah was lynched by some male Muslim students and burnt, for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed.

In their separate reactions, Oby and Yesufu while condemning the incident, said Deborah must get justice.

She wrote on Twitter, ”Deborah sadly joins the long list of those who must be given Justice in this Land someday; no matter how long it takes for us to build a society where human life is respected and accorded dignity. Her “religious” killers will surely account. Someday. On earth and before God.
