1. DSS denied me access to Kanu, Sowore alleges
Officials of the Department of State Service, on Thursday, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, allegedly denied human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Mr Omoyele Sowore, access to detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, despite granting him a formal invitation.
Sowore was listed among those expected to visit Kanu as requested by the IPOB leader on Thursday. A document acquired by The PUNCH revealed.
The activist who arrived at the facility at about 2 pm at the appointed time was asked to sit in the visitor’s waiting room till about 4:50 pm, and eventually, the officials denied him access to see Kanu.
Narrating his ordeal at the DSS facility to journalists, Sowore said Kanu’s father-in-law, who was also at the facility to visit him was brief in his visit to enable him (Sowore) to take his turn since the service could permit only one person at a time.
2. Lagos Assembly okays victim, witnesses protection bill
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to protect witnesses and victims in the state.
The ‘bill for a law to provide for the rights and entitlements of victims and protection of witnesses and for connected purposes’ was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa.
The bill stipulates provision of assistance and protection to victims and witnesses who have vital information that could help ensure effective prosecution of cases, but who face intimidation due to their cooperation with the prosecution or law enforcement agencies.
A part of the bill further states: “Every person, including security agents shall render assistance to victims of accidents or crimes and ensure that such persons are taken to the nearest hospital for immediate care and treatment.
3. US sanctions Iran for violating protesters’ rights
The United States has announced sanctions against the Iranian government over its recent attacks on protesters.
Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets of the country following the death of a young woman in the custody of the police.
Last week, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died while in the custody of Iran’s Morality Police, after she was detained for allegedly wearing a hijab headscarf in an “improper” way.
Activists said the woman, whose Kurdish first name is Jhina, had suffered a fatal blow to the head, a claim denied by officials, who had announced an investigation.

4. Investment in security yielding good dividends- Buhari
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday expressed delight that investments in improving security are yielding good dividends, lauding the Nigeria military for making significant progress in the fight against insecurity and building the momentum in reducing challenges to its barest minimum.
Speaking at the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum held on the margins of the 77th UN General Assembly in New York, the President pledged that the Federal Government would do more to improve security, recognising that the sector is another critical element in the flow of investment, and overall economic and infrastructural development.
President Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina was quoted as saying, ”We will continue to give all necessary support to our security outfits to ensure that they are able to tackle the challenge headlong”, he said, stressing that ”the advantages and disadvantages of investing in Nigeria far outweigh the challenges.”
5. Nnamdi Kanu has not eaten for 2 days, in excruciating pains – Ifeanyi Ejiofor
The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has not eaten in the past 48 hours owing to excruciating pains occasioned by his gastro intestine disorder, his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor has revealed.
Ejiofor, who made the disclosure after his team paid a routine visit to Kanu at the detention facility of the Department of State Services, DSS, on Thursday, alleged that the security agency procured substandard drugs to be administered on his client.
He accused the DSS of disobeying a subsisting court order by denying the embattled IPOB leader access to his personal doctor and medication.
A press statement the lawyer who refers to Kanu as “Onyendu”, a word in Igbo language that means leader, made available to Vanguard, read: “As usual, the Court-Ordered routine visit to our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was conducted today, at the DSS Headquarters Abuja, where Onyendu is still being held in solitary confinement for over 14 months.
6. Multichoice, stakeholders reject ‘Pay-per-view’
MULTICHOICE Nigeria and other Stakeholders in the broadcast communication sector have totally rejected a proposed pay-per-view for pay TV.
Almost all the stakeholders that made presentation at the public hearing on “Pay-TV Hikes And Demand for Pay-per-view subscription model,” organised by the Senate Adhoc Committee chaired by the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Sabi Abdullahi, told the Senate that the pay-per-view was not in the interest of consumers.
According to the Stakeholders including a major cable television firm in the country, MutiChoice Nigeria, the pay per view model being canvassed by the Senate as against the current monthly billing, was difficult to implement and that it would further hurt the economy.

7. Kebbi, Britain to co-operate on economy, culture
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs Catiriona Laing yesterday said the British Government will deepen its economic and cultural relationship with Kebbi State.
She stated this in Birni-Kebbi when she visited Kebbi State.
She said there is an existing and deep relationship between Nigeria and Britain which made the late Queen visit Nigeria twice in her lifetime. The commissioner said King Charles lll will deepen the relationship.
8. UNICEF laments Northeast’s children’s education challenges
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the challenges which children’s education and health experience in the Northwest.
The Chief of UNICEF Field Office in Kano Mr Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah stated this at a capacity-building training for media practitioners in Jigawa, Kano and Katsina states.
He said: “Children are facing a lot of challenges, particularly in the areas of health and education.”
Farah, who was represented by the UNICEF Communication Specialist Mr Samuel Kalu lamented that, at times, children lack even the right to survive like every other person. This, he said, causes them to undergo some debilitating experiences.

9. How Buhari is addressing crude oil theft – Malami
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, (AGF) Abubakar Malami SAN, has said that Nigeria is making concerted efforts in addressing oil theft including spending enormous resources on pipeline surveillance security through the regular Armed Forces budgetary spending and payments to civilian security companies under unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.
Malami made this known on Thursday in New York at the Nigeria International Partnership Forum with the theme ‘Scaling up International Economic Partnerships for Nigeria in a Post-Covid -19 World’.
The forum was organized by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the African Business Roundtable, an offshoot of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly 2022 where the Minister spoke on the topic ‘International Action to Stop Crude Oil Theft: Proposed Measures and the Road Ahead’
Malami’s position at the occasion was made known by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, in a statement issued in Abuja.
10. NCC reveals new ways attackers exploit Zoom, offers advice
The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has advised users of videotelephony platform, Zoom, to install the latest update of the software from its publisher’s official website following the discovery of vulnerabilities that allows a remote attacker to exploit the app.
In an advisory issued on Wednesday, NCC-CSIRT reported that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) found several flaws in the Zoom product.
The videotelephony platform became popular for virtual meetings in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic with more than 300 million daily users.
According to the NCC-CSIRT advisory, “A remote attacker could exploit the vulnerabilities to circumvent implemented security measures and cause a denial of service on the targeted machine.”
It noted that “These vulnerabilities exist owing to incorrect access control implementation in Zoom On-Premises Meeting Connector MMR prior to version 4.8.20220815.130.
