1. Sanwo-Olu suspends RTEAN activities in Lagos

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has suspended all activities of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in the state.

This was made known by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, on Thursday.

He noted that the suspension has become imperative following some pockets of violence recorded in Ojo and Lagos Island on Wednesday, adding that a 35- Man Caretaker Committee has been constituted to take over activities of the union henceforth.

“In a bid to fulfill one of the cardinal objectives of the T.H.E.M.E.S developmental agenda of the present administration in Lagos State as it relates to Security and Good Governance, under Traffic Management and Transportation, the Lagos State Government has suspended all activities of RTEAN with immediate effect,” Giwa said.

2. Fraud: EFCC nabs siblings, 24 others, recovers car

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,  have arrested two siblings: Lateef Afeez Abiodun and Lateef Abdullahi Olalekan alongside twenty-four others, for suspected internet-related fraudulent activities in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Head, Media & Publicity of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said this in a statement on Thursday.

The statement said they were arrested on Tuesday at the Apete area of Ibadan based on actionable intelligence worked upon by the commission.

The other suspects are Awotunde Joseph Sunday, Ojekunle Ifakorede Apesinola, Oladepo Kayode Samuel, Emmanuel Michael Blessing, Shittu Hassan Taiwo, Olubanji Michael Remilekan, Bakari Ibrahim Oluwatosin, Nafiu Hassan Ayomide, Shittu Toheeb Ife, Kehinde Abiodun, Ibikunle Lolade Tanimola, Ahmad Sodiq Adekola, Joshua Sowemimo, Adeleke Adegoke Yusuf and Ahmad Ridwan Adeniyi.

3. Panic as soldiers invade Anambra market, shoot sporadically

There was tension and chaos at the Nkwo Market in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Thursday, as soldiers stormed the area and started shooting sporadically into the air.

This is following the reported killing of five soldiers and two civilians by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the area on Wednesday.

The soldiers were said to mobilise troops to the community in reaction to the killings which occurred in the area, where the hoodlums laid an ambush on the soldiers while on routine patrol duties.

It was gathered that tension was heightened upon the invasion of the military men as they shot in the air while ordering the traders to close their shops.

The action caused pandemonium as everybody scampered to safety while schools in the area quickly closed as parents withdrew their children. The roads, within a few minutes, were equally deserted.

4. Iyana-Iba Riot: RTEAN suspends ‘Student’ for instigating unrest

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, says it has suspended one of its Lagos State Vice Chairmen, Oluwaseyi Bamgbose, popularly known as ‘Student’ for instigating unrest in the Association.

Speaking on the suspension, National President, Alhaji Musa Muhammed, in a statement in Lagos through the National Publicity Secretary of the union, Alhaji Abdulrahman Amusan, disclosed that, Bamgbose moves and actions recently were capable of inflammation violence in the Lagos State Council of the association.

Muhammed who is also the Lagos State Chairman of RTEAN, said, Bamgbose had earlier in the day organised an illegal protest at Alausa Secretariat with some disgruntled elements in his efforts to create violence and unrest in the association.

Muhammed alleged that the intention and plot of Bamgbose was to cause trouble so much that the State Government would regard the peaceful association as uncoordinated and subsequently place a ban on its activities.

5. NASS leadership meets Finance ministers over 2023 budget proposals

THE Leadership of the National Assembly yesterday met with the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed and the Minister of State, Clement Agba and top officials of the ministry preparatory to the presentation of the 2023 Budget proposals by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The National Assembly leadership was led by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President of the Senate, Ola Awoniyi, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed and Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clement Agba led their team of officials of Finance Ministry to the meeting.

The meeting was held at the Senate wing of the National Assembly behind closed doors.

6. INEC vows to monitor parties’ campaigns expenses

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised to monitor political parties’ campaigns and expenses for the 2023 general elections to ensure compliance with the laws.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the signing of the peace accord for the peaceful campaign organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) on Thursday in Abuja.

Yakubu said that would be done to ensure that parties shun abusive language and comply with spending limits for elections.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa has boldly flagged off the presidential campaign within his household, with his 28 children and four wives.

The lawmaker represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State.

Doguwa, on different occasions, has affirmed that his entire household will vote for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

8. My Supreme Court victory divine, says Adeleke as Osun PDP expels Babayemi

Osun Governor-Elect Senator Ademola Adeleke has said the Supreme Court’s declaration of him as the authentic Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate has confirmed his victory is divine.

The PDP also expelled Prince Dotun Babayemi from the party for taking Adeleke to court.

The Supreme Court dismissed Babayemi’s suit contesting Adeleke’s nomination as Osun PDP Governorship candidate.

9. Strike: FG begs ASUU to accept IPPIS

The federal government has begged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to accept the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) with the promise of improving the payment platform to fit the needs of the lecturers.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Sylvia Okolieaboh, made the plea on Thursday during the meeting between the union and the federal government at the House of Representatives.

Recall that the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila had last week called for an extended meeting of all stakeholders in the education sector to resolve the over seven months strike.

The Accountant General said the government will accommodate the union on the issue of salaries in a bid to end the strike.

10. Police probe death of boy in Lagos after injections

The police in Lagos has commenced a probe of the death of a young boy

The kid died after some injections were allegedly administered to him in a hospital in the Ogombo area.

Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin said the matter has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba.

The spokesman confirmed that the father of the deceased was yet to write a statement.

“The hospital staff also came to the station without making any statement.

“They were transferred to the state CID for proper investigation”, Hundeyin told NAN.
