1. CBN pledges support for Ogun commodity farmers

The Central Bank of Nigeria has declared its readiness to give more support to members of the Ogun Famers and Commodity Association in its Anchor Borrowers Programme.

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, stated this on Thursday, when the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, led the leadership of the association to the headquarters of the Apex bank in Abuja.

Speaking, Abiodun expressed his administration’s appreciation to the bank for giving maximum support to the state nominees for the programme.

2. Contempt: APC threatens to sue Bayelsa speaker, lawmaker

The All Progressives Congress on Thursday threatened legal action against the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and the sacked lawmaker representing Brass Constituency 1, Daniel Charles, over alleged contempt of court.

Also in trouble for the same alleged offence is the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, following non-compliance with the sacking of Charles by the Court of Appeal.

Ingobere and Charles risk jail term for not abiding by the order of the court, which sacked the latter with immediate effect.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, had on July 14, 2022, in a unanimous decision by Justices Joseph Shagbaor Ikeyegh, Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole and Olabode Adegbehingbe, in suit number CA/PH/79/2022, ruled that there was merit in the appeal filed by the APC, which sought the removal of Charles as a member of the House for defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party from APC on whose platform he won the election to the Assembly.

The court, which hinged its decision on Section 109 (1) (g) and (2) of the Constitution, ordered the speaker under constitutional duties to declare Charles’s seat vacant and directed Charles to return all monies and allowances he had collected since April 14, 2021.

3. Amusan sets new record, wins Diamond League trophy

Nigeria’s world record holder Tobi Amusan set a new record on Thursday as she won another trophy after finishing in 12.29s to successfully defend her Diamond League title.

She won the women’s 100 meters hurdles at this year’s Diamond League in Zurich.

Kendra Harrison of the United States and Britany Anderson of Jamaica finished second and third, respectively, behind the champion.

The 25-year-old had in August, won the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

This was after she had, at the World Athletic Championship, broken the hurdles record in the semi-finals in 12.12s.

4. Military items, foreign currencies found in Mamu’s house — DSS

The Department of State Services confirmed on Thursday night that operatives had carried out search on Tukur Mamu’s home and offices in Kaduna with many discoveries.

The DSS in a statement by its Spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said that among the materials found during the search by ‘appropriate security agencies’ were incriminating materials including Military accoutrements.

The security agency also announced that large cash in various foreign currencies were also recovered from the home and offices of the kidnap victims negotiator.

Afunanya said, “So far, appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office. During the processes, incriminating materials including military accoutrements were recovered.

5. Looting allegation against past Benue Govs shocking, ridiculous – State Govt

Benue state government has described as shocking, ridiculous and unfortunate the recent statement credited to the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia who was alleged to have blamed past Governors of the state from 1976 for the “unconscionable looting of public funds” leading to the underdevelopment of the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Terver Akase who in a statement issued on Thursday in Makurdi berated the governorship candidate for the said damning statement which he said came from one who had never held a public office and “totally lacks the capacity to fathom what it takes to govern a state.”

According to Akase, “Alia’s condemnation of all past and present Governors of Benue State, the likes of the late Aper Aku, the late Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, Senators George Akume and Gabriel Suswam, as well as the incumbent Samuel Ortom as looters and failed Governors rather casts serious questions on his credentials as an aspiring leader. A man who wants to be king does not kill a king.

6. Insecurity: Buhari urges Nigerians to have faith in Armed Forces

In the face of the state of insecurity in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to have confidence in the Armed Forces at bringing a lasting peace and stability to the country.

He gave the encouragement while commissioning the Nigerian Navy ultra modern sports  complex at the Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos.

The President who also declared the 12th Nigerian Navy Games,  held in the newly commissioned sports complex opened,  assured that the Armed Forces would continue to sustain their operational tempo , with a view to addressing the security challenges .

7. Law Prof emerges UNILORIN VC

The Council of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced a Professor of law and jurisprudence Wahab Olassupo Egbewole (SAN) as the next vice chancellor of the institution.

Prof Egbewole succeeds outing Vice Chancellor Prof Sulyman Age AbdulKareem whose tenure ends October 15.

UNILORIN’s Chairman, Governing Council Mallam A. Yazid told reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, adding that the 61 years old new vice chancellor has been with the university for the last 25 years.

8. UPDATED: Seven injured as building collapse in Ibadan

No fewer than seven persons sustained varying degrees of injury when an uncompleted five-storey hotel building collapsed in the early hours of Thursday in Ibadan.

The affected building was adjacent a new generation bank at Awosika area, Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Sources said the incident happened at about 5:45am when Muslims were returning from early morning prayers.

9. EFL postpones Friday’s fixtures after Queen Elizabeth II’s death

The EFL has postponed two fixtures that were to be played on Friday, as a mark of respect following the passing away of Queen Elizabeth II.

Burnley were scheduled to face Norwich City in the Championship, while Tranmere Rovers were to welcome Stockport County in League Two.

However, both games will now be rescheduled.

“As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed that its fixtures scheduled for tomorrow evening (Friday 9 September) – Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County – have been postponed,” the statement from EFL read.

10. 2023 election: Atiku addresses PDP crisis amid Wike’s opposition

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has addressed the conflict in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 polls.

The leading opposition platform is seemingly fractured over the outcome of the May presidential convention in Abuja.

Atiku emerged as the flagbearer ahead of his main challenger, Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike.

Wike has been blowing hot, attacking the Atiku camp and allies including PDP chair Iyorchia Ayu and Uche Secondus.

At the 97th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday, the ex-VP expressed commitment to ensuring resolution of the internal crisis.
