1. Keep Nigerians alive, Kukah advises incoming govt

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has urged the incoming government to keep Nigerians alive before embarking on fulfilling electoral promises.

Kukah stated this in his Easter message on Sunday.

The Bishop noted that while the country is preparing for the next administration, the pressing need for the incoming President, Bola Tinubu, should be to address the core issues facing the nation.

He expressed hope that the next government would recognise that Nigeria’s most urgent task is not the mere construction of physical infrastructure, but rather the establishment of a strong foundation of social justice, equality, and respect for human rights.

2. Fire guts two-storey building in Rivers, tenants seek help

Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed when a fire gutted a two-storey building in the Rumuomoi axis of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 3:35 pm on Saturday from the top floor of the building which houses a set of flats.

Though the cause of the inferno could not be ascertained, it reported destroyed valuables and personal effects belonging to tenants, as the fire forced all occupants to run helter-skelter, while some made frantic efforts to see if they could salvage some property.

An eyewitness said those on the first floor were able to remove some valuables before the fire spread to other areas.

3. Ajibola’s contributions will outlive him, Buhari mourns ex-minister

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Sunday, described late jurist and former Attorney-General of the Federation, Bola Ajibola, as a “patriotic” Nigerian whose contributions to the advancement of humanity would outlive him.

“His contributions to the development of our legal system cannot be overstated. His patriotic inclinations, integrity and passion for service and advancement of humanity will continue to resonate after him,” Buhari said, according to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

In the statement titled ‘President Buhari mourns outstanding jurist, Bola Ajibola,’ the President condoled with the Ajibola family over the passing of their son and father.

Born on March 22, 1934 in Owu, near Abeokuta, present-day Ogun State, to the Owu royal family of Oba Abdul-Salam Ajibola Gbadela II, Ajibola attended Owu Baptist Day School and Baptist Boys’ High School in Abeokuta between 1942 and 1955.

4. Eight missing after French building collapse

Eight people were unaccounted for Sunday after an apartment building collapsed in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille as a fire hindered rescue operations, authorities said.

Five people from neighbouring buildings were hurt in a possible explosion that destroyed the four-storey block at around 12:40 am (2240 GMT Saturday).

Local prosecutor Dominique Laurens told reporters that eight people “were not responding to phone calls”, saying it was impossible so far to identify the cause of the collapse.

A gas explosion was “clearly” one of the possible causes, she added.

5. Cultists kill policeman in Lagos

Cultists, attacked a team of policemen attached to Imota Divisional headquarters  in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, killing one for them with an  undisclosed  identity.

As at yesterday, Vanguard gathered that the Police were still on the trail of perpetrators of the dastactly act .

Police sources hinted that the team of  policemen were on  duty at Enuren junction on  Itokin road, Friday night  , when they were attacked.

6. 22-yr-old set ablaze for stealing android phone in Calabar

A 22 year old boy simply identified as Eyo has been set ablaze by an angry mob at Esu street off Edim Otop street , Atimbo , Calabar Municipality LGA of Cross River state.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told Vanguard that Eyo stole the android phone yesterday evening and vanished only to resurface Sunday morning to meet his Waterloo.

According to multiple sources Eyo who resides around Second transformer, Inyanghasang has been involved in petty stealing for a very long time.

7. Buhari mourns Dantata, condoles with Kano community

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the demise of Hajiya Rabi Dantata, wife of businessman, philanthropist and patriarch of the large Dantata family in Kano, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.

The president, in a condolence message issued by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, on Sunday in Abuja, said the deceased would be remembered for her unparalleled compassion and philanthropy.

“She had a passion for service to the people. She was a celebrated philanthropist who loved to share all that she had.

”Her simple and compassionate life was an inspiration to all those around her,” he added.

He prayed to Allah to accept her good deeds and give strength to the Dantata family to bear the loss.

8. Abductors of Ogboni head’s wives demanded N2m ransom, energy drink, cigarettes

The abductors of two wives of the of Ogboni Aborigines, Oba Adetoyese Olakisan, demanded N2m ransom as well as energy drinks and cigarettes to release the remaining victim in their den.

But the victim was rescued in the early hours of Sunday by local security operatives after a gun battle that lasted for several minutes.

The family member of the victim, who is the head of a cultural security group, Kiriji Heritage Defenders, Dr Ademola Ekundayo, confirmed to The Nation the victim has been rescued.

The abductors kidnapped two wives of the Ogboni head at their residence in Oke-Imesi in Obokun Local Government Area before one of them escaped last week.

9. Nigeria spent N3.36trn on debt servicing in 2022 – DMO

Data from the Debt Management Office, DMO, has shown that Nigeria’s debt servicing increased by 14.68 per cent to N3.36 trillion in 2022 as against N2.93 trillion spent in the previous year.

DAILY POST recalls that the latest DMO figure revealed Nigeria’s total debt stock, both external and domestic debts in 2022, increased to 46.25 trillion in December.

A breakdown of the figure showed that the country spent $2.4 billion, equivalent to N1.07 trillion using the current exchange rate of $/N460, to service its external debt last year.

10. EPL: Gary Neville slams Liverpool stars of ‘schoolboy defending’ in Arsenal draw

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has slammed Liverpool defenders Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk following the Reds’ 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday.

The former defender accused both backmen of ‘schoolboy’ defending against Arsenal in the first half of the all-important game for Arsenal.

Arsenal scored twice in the first half through Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus with Mohamed Salah halving the deficit later on.
