Newspaper Headlines

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Six feared dead as tankers explode in Rivers

A wildfire from two petrol tankers has resulted in the death of six persons who were said to be scooping diesel in Eteo, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It was gathered that the truck containing 33,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas popularly known as AGO was set on fire by security men.

The incident occurred in a bush near Trailer Park Junction, a popular business point at the Eleme section of the East-West Road.

An eyewitness identified as Gideon said drivers of two tankers were forced at gunpoint to drive into the bush, where the security agents set the tankers on fire.

Gideon alleged that the drivers may have refused to part with some cash which spurred the men to take such action.

He said, “They (security men) forced the truck owners at gunpoint to drive to the point where this happened.

“Remember, things like this often happen when the tanker drivers refuse to settle them for the amount of money they demand from them.

2. Alleged fraud: Investors protest at Rivers Christ Embassy

Scores of victims of a forex firm, MBA Trading and Capital Investment Limited picketed the Christ Embassy Church located on Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Sunday.

The protesters numbering over 50 said they invested various sums of money in the company with a promise to get their payment, but two years after, nothing has been heard from the company’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Maxwell Odum.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had declared the company’s Maxwell Oko wanted for alleged fraud in 2021, following a petition it received from the victims who stormed its premises to protest and demand the former’s arrest.

The protesters, including women, said they were going through untold hardship and suffering since the company allegedly collapsed, saying some of them had died from depression, while some had been evicted from their houses due to their inability to pay rent.

The protesters, under the aegis of ‘victims of MBA forex fraud’ gathered at the road leading to the church with placards chanting songs to drive home their demands, saying, ‘Maxwell Odum pay us our money.’

3. Senate: Why Umahi’s female rival was expelled – APC

The All Progressives Congress, Ebonyi Chapter, has said it suspended and expelled the factional Senatorial candidate of the party for Ebonyi South Zone, Mrs Ann Agom-Eze, owing to alleged gross misconducts.

The party said, “Mrs Agomeze has rebelliously jeopardised her membership by vehemently violating the party’s Constitution, which prohibits any act of dishonesty capable of disparaging it or its member(s).”

The Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, stated this while briefing journalists, in Abakaliki, on Sunday evening.

He said, “Mrs Agomeze has recklessly disparaged herself too by eating back her words in an effort to satisfy her paymasters. How can a woman who voluntarily wrote, signed and submitted her letter of withdrawal from the a Senatorial primary that gave the Federal High Court, Abakakili the impetus to order for a fresh election still denies it in a broad daylight?

“Do you know that she also sworn an affidavit to that effect and all these documents are substantially available including at the National Secretariat.

“Out of greed, the same Mrs Agomeze approached the state governor who also doubles as the candidate of APC for Ebonyi South Senatorial District, Engr David Nweze Umahi to give her a whooping sum of 20million naira and a Pedro Jeep. Just because her insatiable appetite for quick riches hit the rock, she decided to embrace the devil(opposition political party).

9. Arrest of Owo church assailants exonerates herdsmen – Fulani group

A Fulani group, Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) said the recent arrest of St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, assailants by security forces has clearly exonerated herdsmen who were wrongfully accused of carrying out the brutal attack on innocent worshippers.

Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, KACRAN’S National President stated this in a statement issued on Sunday and made available to DAILY POST in Damaturu.
