1. Osinbajo inaugurates new electricity liability board
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has said the newly constituted board of the Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company would enhance ongoing efforts to resolve the liabilities relating to tariff shortfalls for power distribution companies nationwide.
According to a statement on Sunday signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo made the assertion in his remarks delivered virtually at the inauguration of the new 10-member board of NELMCO.
The statement is titled ‘FG moves to resolve tariff shortfalls in power sector as Osinbajo inaugurates Nigeria electricity liability management company’s board.’
The vice president also mandated the board composed of Ministers of Finance, Power, others to protect the interests of the society, particularly ordinary citizens.
2. ASUU strike: FG’S proposal may lead to lecturers’ pay cut
The offer made by the Federal Government to lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities may lead to a reduction in the salaries of entry level lecturers under the graduate assistant cadre, investigations by Sunday PUNCH have revealed.
Our correspondent also gathered that the Federal Government’s offer had been rejected by the majority of ASUU members, who had held their zonal congresses.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that the union leaders met with the Emeritus Professor Nimi-Briggs committee last Tuesday.
ASUU had on Monday, February 14, 2022 announced the commencement of a strike due to what it described as “failure” on the part of the government to meet some of the lingering demands of the union.
3. Sowore condemns mob action against ‘fake bishop’
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the attack on a man alleged to be a ‘fake bishop’ in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to Sowore, the victim who is a plumber was accused of appearing as a “fake bishop” at the unveiling of the All Progressives Congres vice-presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima, in Abuja weeks ago.
Sowore alleged that the victim was ‘apprehended’ presumably by supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, in a market in Dei Dei neighbourhood of Abuja.
In a series of tweets on his Twitter handle on Sunday, the AAC presidential candidate also faulted Nigerians, who he claimed, supported the mob action on social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp.

Some Rivers state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains who have differences with Governor Nyesom Wike over 2023 elections now avoid visit or stay in Rivers as the Governor deploys rage over perceived political enemies.
In guise of sustaining prevailing peace and security in Rivers, Wike in the last one week has ordered police closure and occupation of two hospitality centers and a fuel retail outlet, all belonging to estranged allies who have deserted him and shifted allegiance to PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The day after, the owner of the shut fuel station, Mega Tools Filling Station, Hon Chinyere Igwe, a serving House of Reps member was declared wanted by Governor Wike for alleged dealing on illegal petroleum products, an allegation the suspect has denied, accusing Wike of political victimisation.
The Governor declaring his fury on the perceived Rivers PDP rebels Friday as he ordered Police arrest of Hon Igwe made it clear that any party ally who has benefitted from his administration and now wants to align with his political enemies to run him down would not escape his wrath.
5. Train attack: CAN seeks intensified security intervention, rescue of Azurfa Lois, others
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called for the deployment of Special Forces in the military and the Nigeria Police Force on a mission to rescue the remaining victims of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack who are still held in captivity.
The apex Christian body also urged Nigerians to continue to pray for lasting peace and security in our country.
Last Friday, Mr Tukur Mamu, a negotiator who has secured the release of some of the train attack victims, raised the alarm that a terrorist leader wanted to marry one of the victims, 21-year-old Miss Azurfa Lois, a Christian.
Reacting in a brief statement on Sunday night, CAN said, “We are mindful of the alarm raised by Mr Tukur Mamu, and the situation is worrisome.
6. Police rescue four kidnapped victims in Edo
Edo State Police Command has rescued four kidnapped victims in the state.
In a statement signed by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, the police said the victims were rescued following credible information at the command’s disposal on 20/08/2022.
According to the statement, at about 2150Hrs, hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers dressed in Military Uniforms emerged from the bush along the Benin-Akure Road, intercepted a Toyota Camry car with Reg no MM528AA and whisked away the occupants into the bush.
Iwegbu said, operatives of the Command immediately mobilized to the scene for rigorous bush combing and rescue of the victims. The hoodlums on sighting the Operatives on their trail opened fire on them, this led to a gun duel.

7. Police rescue Rev Okafoh from Abuja mob
Police operatives at Deidei Building Material Market New Site, Abuja have rescued one Reverend Hilary C. Okafoh of Madalla, Niger State from mob action.
Okafoh was spotted on Saturday by traders and almost lynched but for the timely intervention of the police, who escorted him out of the Dei Dei International Building Materials Market, Abuja.
It was gathered that the mob descended on for his alleged involvement in the impersonation of bishops during the unveiling of Senator Shettima as All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate last month.
FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident but said that a crowd of jesters followed Reverend Okafoh, trying to take pictures of him while passing humiliating comments on him.
8. Mob kills, razes suspected motorcycle thief in Osun
A middle-aged suspected motorcycle thief simply identified as Loni was on Sunday killed and set ablaze by an angry mob in Osun State.
The Nation gathered that Loni was mobbed when he attempted to steal a motorcycle in Ilesa on Sunday morning. He was mobbed to death and steal ablaze.
A statement by Osun Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, explained around 8:30am one Loni was found dead at Ireti Ayo along Ijebu-Jess Road in Ilesha.
She noted the deceased specialised in stealing motorcycles in Ilesha.

9. 2023: Rights group warns Wike over crackdown on Atiku’s loyalists, others; alerts police, DSS
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) has carpeted the Rivers State’s Governor, Nyesom Wike for allegedly launching crackdowns on his political opponents including those of his own Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The rights group in a statement issued by its national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Usman Alkali Baba, the Director General of the State security Services, DSS Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi and the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya to instruct their operatives not to be used by Governor Wike for his “tyrannical attacks against political rival”.
According to HURIWA, Governor Wike who is a lawyer ought to be “abreast of the indubitably binding and authoritative fact that constitutional democracy embodies several constitutional and democratic rights that are fundamental human rights enshrined in chapter 4 of the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended including the rights to civil and political freedoms, freedom of association, peaceful assembly and respect for the dignity of the human persons all of which are protected both locally and globally by binding precepts, Laws and covenants entered into by Nigeria as a member of the United Nations”.
10. Monarch orders closure of Akure markets, shops for traditional festival
The Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, has ordered the shut down of commercial activities within Akure, the Ondo State capital on Monday, August 22.
The monarch ordered that all marketplaces and shops in Akure and its neighboring settlements be closed in observance of the town’s yearly ancient traditional celebration, known as “Aheregbe.”
Michael Adeyeye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deji of Akure, said in a statement that the closure is required as part of the long-standing custom in honor of the yearly Aheregbe Festival.
