1. Bullion vans must not determine election result – Atiku 

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, urged Nigerians not to allow the results of the 2023 presidential election to be determined by “bullion vans.”

In a newsletter sent to our correspondent, the former vice-president and serial presidential candidate urged Nigerians to channel frustrations accrued from the scarcity of naira and fuel to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“A few days ago, I had cause to make a statement on the currency conversion policy of the federal government. In the said statement, I aligned my position with an upsurge of demands for a slight extension of the January 31 deadline.

2. Embrace cashless policy, Okowa directs govt agencies 

The Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has directed all government agencies in the state, particularly hospitals, to embrace a full cashless policy to mitigate the sufferings of the masses.

The governor gave the directive in view of the hardship caused by the redesign of the scarcity new naira notes and subsequent directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria on the need for citizens to embrace cashless policy.

He also called on the Federal Government and the monetary authorities to ensure full penetration of banking services to the rural communities and urged private businesses to embrace the cashless policy irrespective of the hiccups presently experienced in order to reduce the sufferings of the masses.

3. Harry Kane becomes Tottenham’s all-time top scorer 

Harry Kane became Tottenham’s record goal scorer on Sunday when he netted his 267th goal for the club against Manchester City.

The England captain slotted home the opening goal against the Premier League champions to move past Jimmy Greaves, who scored 266 goals for Spurs between 1961 and 1970.

The 29-year-old is now also just the third player to net 200 Premier League goals, after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).

7. Naira redesign good for economy – UBA CEO 

Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Chief Oliver Chukwudum Alawuba, has described the Naira redesign as the best thing that could happen to Nigerian economy at this time.

He assured that the deposit monetary banks are working assiduously with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to erase the current hardship faced by Nigerians in accessing the new naira notes.

Speaking after being conferred with an honorary doctoral degree at the 8th convocation ceremony of the Imo State University, Owerri, he said that the new policy will stabilise the Naira and make it stronger in the long run.

He said, “The redesign of the naira is a positive policy that will support the economy in the long run. It’s true that we are passing though transition period and I believe that the CBN is working with Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to make sure that the aspiration and purpose of the redesign come into fruition for the good of the country.”

8. Nigeria, India to move against fake passports 

The Federal Government would collaborate with India government to end issuance of fake international passports, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said at the weekend.

Aregbesola, who explained the steps taken by the government to ensure the integrity of Nigerian passports, said the government is willing to cooperate with India on total eradication of fake Nigerian passports into India.

Receiving the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria in his office, Aregbesola told Ambassador Gangadharan Balasubramanian, that Nigeria would for ever remain grateful to India for her support during the country’s anti-colonial struggle that led to Independence.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has reacted to the statement by the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, that he should focus on Nollywood instead of running for presidency.

The former Anambra State Governor said he would work hard to improve on the Nollywood industry.

Obi gave the reply on Sunday while featuring on Arise Television’s Sunday Show Program.

Recall that El-Rufai had while featuring on the Channels Television’s programme over the week dismissed Obi’s chances in the forthcoming presidential election.
