1. Lagos security outfit seeks financial aid
The Joint Security Task Force, Lagos Mainland Local Command, has appealed to the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for financial and moral support to keep its operations going.
The Chairman of the security outfit, Ishola Agbodemu, disclosed this in a letter addressed to the state governor, Chief of Staff to the state governor, Tayo Ayinde; the Oloto of Otto, Muhammad Basiru; the Executive Chairman, Lagos Mainland Local Government, Rasheedat Essien; and the Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Kayode Omiyale; on Sunday.
Agbodemu stated that there were suspicions of attacks from hoodlums in the area, adding that the financial aid would be an incentive to members of the security outfit.
He said, “The Joint Security Task Force, Lagos Mainland Local Government Command is a coalition of community-based security organisations, set up with the purpose of protecting lives and property of residents of Lagos Mainland Local Government.
2. Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi bad for Atiku – Keyamo
The spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has said the endorsement of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by former president Olusegun Obasanjo is bad for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.
Obasanjo had, in his New Year message to Nigerians, described Obi as having an edge in terms of character, antecedent, understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality over other candidates in the 2023 presidential election.
Reacting, Keyamo, in a tweet on Sunday, said the endorsement had no effect on the presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
3. Nigeria achieved nothing in 2022, says Kukah
Nigeria does not have anything for which to beat her chest and claim as an achievement in 2022, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Fr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said.
He also called on Nigerians to work towards a free, fair credible and violence-free election in which votes would count.
Kukah who said these in an interview with The PUNCH dismissed political permutations that the 2023 elections would end in a rerun, saying “Let us run first before we talk about re-run.”

4. FG to monitor development of first babies of the year
The Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Pauline Tallen, says the Federal Government would sustain the reward given to every first baby of the year and also monitor their development.
The minister stated this on Sunday while welcoming the First Baby of the year 2023, a baby boy named, Chimemla Testimony Uchenna at the Kubwa General Hospital in Abuja.
Tallen, represented by Mr Ali Madugu, Director Child Development Department in the ministry said the tradition of rewarding the baby of the year had been sustained since 2012.

Dino Melaye who is the Spokesperson and Director, Public Affairs of the Atiku Abubakar/Ifeanyi Okowa Presidential Campaign for next year’s election wants Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike to honour the vow he made on the night of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primary.
Wike who was also in the running to clinch the party’s ticket had promised to work with whoever emerged winner, but what has happened since that time are events threatening to derail the party’s bid to take over power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and likely implosion.
The G-5 which Wike spearheads has maintained its call on the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu to step down for the sake of equity, fairness and justice, noting that the party cannot parade a national chairman and presidential candidate from the same region (North) of the country.
6. New year tragedy: 7 die, 16 injured in Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident
No fewer than seven persons were confirmed dead on Sunday while 16 others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and Mack tanker a few meters from Gofamaint on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.
Umar said that the accident occurred at 4:10 pm and was caused by excessive speed on the part of the bus driver who lost control and rammed into the tanker from behind.
