1. Osun poll: Candidates disagree on arms for Amotekun, residents

Some candidates of some political parties participating in the July 16 Osun governorship poll on Sunday disagreed with the suggestion that operatives of the Amotekun corps should bear arms.

But the candidates, however, rejected the idea of asking residents to bear arms for self defence in the face of insecurity.

Speaking at a debate organised by the Channels Television in Osogbo, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress at the poll, said since men of Amotekun corps would be engaging criminals who bear arms, it would be desirable for the operatives of the corps to bear arms.

But the candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, who said if elected, more able people would be recruited into Amotekun corps, said operatives of the corps should not be allowed to bear arms as the constitution forbids them from doing so.

2. Tinubu made wisest choice in Shettima – Zulum

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has described the choice of his predecessor Kashim Shettima as the vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress as the wisest decision by the party’s presidential flag bearer, Bola Tinubu.

The governor, in a statement personally signed by him after Tinubu declared Shettima as his running mate, said the former Borno governor was the best for Tinubu.

According to him, it has been my greatest wish that HE Kashim Shettima gets this elevation that he so much deserves as one of Nigeria’s highly patriotic leaders.

“For me, and I am sure for many leaders and members of the APC, Tinubu’s choice of HE Kashim Shettima is the wisest choice at this point in time.”

3. Shettima young, loyal, perfect as VP – Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), on Sunday, described the choice of a former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, as running mate to the standard flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, as perfect.

Keyamo, in a tweet via his official handle @fkeyamo tweeted, “Quintessential banker & economist, suave gentleman & politician, intellectually fertile, economically sound, intergenerational mobile (he’s young, yet experienced), fiercely loyal, phenomenally complementary to @officialABAT; Sen. Kashim Shettima is the perfect choice as VP.”

The PUNCH reports that the standard flag bearer of the APC, Tinubu, had on Sunday, announced the choice of Shettima as running mate.

Speaking to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on his choice of Shettima as running mate, Tinubu said, , “I chose him because he is competent, capable and reliable.”

4. We ‘ll shut power sector if NLC declares action – Electricity workers

Workers in the nation’s Power sector have threatened to shut electricity supply in the country should Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, declare a nationwide protest over the protracted industrial crises in the country’s educational sector.

Under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, the workers argued that the care free attitude of the government whether in the states or national towards the continued closure of schools is a sorry state in the process of Nigeria’s development towards nationhood.

In a statement by its General Secretary, Joe Ajaero, NUEE said it “is deeply saddened and appalled by the impasse between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Unions in the Tertiary Academic Sector (Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Research Institutes) which has avoidably lingered.

“This deadlock which has lasted for several months with the students staying at home; is undoubtedly exposing the students to all forms of negative vices inimical to nation building.

5. Why I picked Shettima as running mate — Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate for 2023 poll, says he decided to pick Sen. Kashim Shettima as his running mate, because he possessed one of the best credentials for the election.

Tinubu announced Shettima as his running mate in a letter personally signed on Sunday in Daura, when he paid Sallah homage on President Muhammadu Buhari.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shettima born on Sept. 2, 1966 and currently represents Borno Central at the National Assembly.

“Today I announce the selection of Sen. Kashim Shettima as my partner and running mate in the mission to advance and reclaim the fortunes of this great country and the hopes of its people.

6. WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons hit four past Burundi, qualify for Q/Final

The Super Falcons of Nigeria comfortably qualified for the quarter finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, beating Burundi 4-0.

A victory was not in doubt as it was only a matter of how many goals they were going to score, and it didn’t take long before they opened their account on the night.

Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the spot in the 25th minute after she was fouled while trying to round Burundi’s goalkeeper, Jeanine Irakoze.

The result from the clash was an injured Burundi goalkeeper who had to be substituted for 16-year-old Amissa Inarunkundo.

7. Billionaire industrialist remanded over alleged Tramadol trafficking

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has remanded a billionaire businessman Ukatu Afamefuna Mallinson, in the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS)’s custody.

Ukatu, Managing Director of Mallinson & Partners Ltd, was remanded on Friday with his co-defendant, Sunday Ifeanyi Ibekwute in connection with an illegal drugs charge.

Justice Peter Lifu made the order following their arraignment by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Ukatu is the Managing Director of Mallinson & Partners Ltd, whom the NDLEA alleged imported two containers containing 1,284 cartons of Tramadol worth N22billion in 2019.

The agency also claimed he was behind a N3billion shipment of tramadol linked to the suspended police chief, Abba Kyari.

8. Ilorin stands still as AbdulRazaq joins Emir, others for Durbar

Ilorin was a beehive of colourful cultural activities on Sunday as sons and daughters of the city, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, gathered to celebrate the Durbar, the first since covid-19 pandemic eased across the world.

The colourful event held at the expansive forecourt of the Emir of Ilorin Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and attended by a large crowd of sons and daughters of the town — many of them on horseback and several others donning different shades of turban and wears that capture their Islamic socio-cultural credentials.

AbdulRazaq, son to the city’s first Mutawali and younger brother to the incumbent holder of the revered title Dr Alimi AbdulRazaq, arrived the event on horseback, fully robed in white turban and flowing Arabo-Islamic attires to match. He arrived in the company of the new Mutawali, who is a front-row member of the Ilorin Emirate royal court.

The duo, along with several other dignitaries, had earlier accompanied the horsecar-chauvered Emir on traditional horse riding which served to showcase beautiful tradition and culture of the town.

9. Tinubu/Shettima presidential running mate is winning ticket – Adeyeye

Former Senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, Adedayo Adeyeye, said the standard bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s choice of Senator Kashim Shettima is a winning ticket.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST in Abuja on Sunday, Adeyeye, who is the leader of South West Agenda for Asiwaju, (SWAGA), a group rooting for Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency in 2023, described the choice of the former governor of Borno State as a round peg in a round hole.

DAILY POST earlier reported that Tinubu on Sunday made his choice of Shettima known to journalists in Daura in Katsina State, while on Eid-el-Kabir homage to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The revelation of Tinubu’s running mate was also formally contained in a statement, which was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media and Communications of Tinubu Campaign Group, which was made available to journalists on Sunday.

10. Osun 2022: I went back to school when people said I had no WAEC certificate – Adeleke

Senator Ademola Adeleke, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has revealed that he returned to school when there were controversies surrounding his educational qualifications.

Adeleke’s educational qualifications, especially his Senior Secondary School Certificate, has been a major campaign weapon for his political opponents, who say that the lawmaker did not attend secondary school.

Recall that the Senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Ajibola Basiru, in a recent interview said that Adeleke deliberately left blank the part he was supposed to fill in details of his secondary school certificate in the form CF01 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Basiru, who is also the Senate spokesman, said he has copies of the forms from 2018 to the present one, claiming that Adeleke initially claimed he has secondary school certificate in 2018, but in the present one he filled, he deliberately omitted that part.
