1. Osun: Court can’t help you, lawyer hits Oyetola

A human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has called on the Governor of Osun State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Oyetola, to concede defeat and congratulate the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

Olajengbesi stated that it will be a disgrace for Oyetola to challenge Adeleke’s victory in court as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The PUNCH reports that Adeleke defeated the incumbent governor by over 28,000 votes in the Saturday, July 16, 2022, governorship governor poll and was returned elected.

In a statement on Sunday, Olajengbesi described any litigation by the APC candidate as a waste of time, adding that even the Supreme Court cannot save Oyetola from his defeat at the poll.

He, therefore, asked Oyetola to be honourable and congratulate Adeleke, just as the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), did on Sunday.

However, rather than following the footstep of the President, Oyetola said APC leadership in Osun will respond to the result of Saturday’s governorship poll after studying it.

2. Man feared dead after shooting self in Osun

A resident of Iraye Area in Modakake, Osun State, simply identified as Sunday has reportedly shot himself while handling a gun.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were unclear.

Though it was insinuated that Sunday being a member of PDP was celebrating the victory of the party in the just concluded governorship poll when he accidentally shot himself.

But another source in Iraye, who pleaded for anonymity, told our correspondent, that Sunday was not celebrating PDP’s victory as being claimed when the incident happened.

3. Give pregnant women, PWDs priority, group urges INEC

A group, the Nigerian Women Trust Fund Gender and Election Watch, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to give more priority to pregnant women, nursing mothers, and persons living with disabilities in the 2023 elections.

The group said this while it observed that priority was given to these categories of persons in some polling units during the just concluded governorship election in Osun State, while others did not.

In a statement on Sunday by the Chief Executive Officer, Mufuliat Fijabi, the group noted that some polling units were also not accessible for persons with disabilities.

The statement part, “The conduct of the election with the implementation of the INEC guidelines on priority voting was observed in several polling units. Aged people, pregnant women, nursing mothers and Persons with Disabilities were given priority attention to cast their votes.

4. Nigeria Energy Forum seeks to boost investments in smart energy

The Chairman, Nigeria Energy Forum (NEF) Dr. Daniel Adeuyi, says its forthcoming conference will focus on boosting investments in climate-smart energy infrastructure and capacity building on modern energy technologies to boost the power sector.

Disclosing this on Sunday, Adeuyi said the theme of NEF2022 Conference and Exhibition is titled: ”Energising Economic Growth and Sustainability.”

He said that the event would be held physically in Lagos on July 21 and virtually on Nov. 24.

The chairman said that organisers would utilise the opportunity of the forum to gather insights from key stakeholders, identify pragmatic recommendations and highlight practical solutions for powering economic growth and financing a sustainable energy transition.

5. 2023: Edo dep gov urges Nigerians to vote for credible, competent leaders

AHEAD of the 2023 general elections, Edo State acting governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu, has urged Nigerians to ensure that only credible and competent leaders were elected to pilot the country.

Shaibu gave the charge during the 17th convocation ceremony of Benson Idahosa University, BIU, weekend, in Benin City.

The acting governor, who was a special guest of honour at the convocation ceremony, urged citizens to pray for the country, noting that only competent leaders can help the nation overcome its many socio-economic challenges.

He said:  “Let’s pray for a greater Nigeria of our dreams. We must also pray for the coming election. As a government, we will do our best to make life better for our people.

6. Okere Urhobo kingdom announces death of monarch, HRM Emmanuel Okumagba

The Traditional Council of Okere Urhobo Kingdom in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State,  has announced the passage of the monarch of the kingdom, His Royal  Majesty,  Sir Emmanuel  Okumagba, Okumagba II, the Orosuen of Okere Urhobo Kingdom.

Speaking at the palace, yesterday,  the Otota of the kingdom,  Brigadier-General Gold Eburu (retd), also declared  a mourning period in the entire kingdom until after the rites of passage which he said would be disclosed later.

He said during the mourning period no marriage, funeral ceremony and related events would hold across the entire kingdom.

7. Bagudu approves N1.9b for school projects in Kebbi

Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu has approved N1.9 billion to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to fast-track the construction and renovation of public schools across the state.

This is contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Muazu-Dakingari yesterday in Birnin-Kebbi the state capital.

The statement quoted the Chairman of the board Prof. Suleiman Khalid-Jega as saying that the fund was for the construction of additional classroom blocks and renovation of dilapidated physical infrastructure in basic and post-basic schools.

8. Operators urge court to stop minister’s threat to ban alcohol sale

Operators of parks and gardens in Abuja under the aegis of the Association of Parks and Garden Owners have asked the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to restrain the Minister, Mohammed Bello from giving effect to his directive banning alcohol sale and ordering parks/gardens to close by 7:00 p.m.

They stated, in a motion on notice filed by their lawyer, Mbanefo Ikwegbue that the FCT Minister’s threat to commence the enforcement of the directive was an affront to the Judiciary because the issue was a subject of a suit marked: CV/408/2008 already pending before the court.

The park/garden operators are praying the court for an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the Minister and his agents from enforcing the purported regulation of 7:00 p.m. as the maximum hours of operations of parks and gardens in Abuja daily pending the determination of the pending suit.

They added that the issue, which is the subject of an existing dispute between the parties, is now sub judice and constitutes a subject of litigation before a competent court of law.

9. Osun election: Bola Ige’s voice resounded from grave – Soyinka reacts to Adeleke’s victory

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has said that the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just concluded Osun governorship election, is “the voice of Bola Ige resounding from the grave.”

This was contained in a statement Soyinka released on Sunday.

Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the election with 403,371 votes, defeating the incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, who polled 375,027 votes.

“Those who conspired to catapult his destroyers to unmerited national prominence, to insult the memories of the living, and jettison basic ethical constraints, have been justly served.

10. Osun election: Peter Obi reacts to Adeleke’s defeat of Oyetola

Former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi has congratulated Osun governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke.

The Labour Party (LP) presidential flagbearer issued a statement on Sunday night.

Obi also hailed LP candidate, Yusuf Lasun and his running mate, Adeola Atanda, for a hard fought battle and their spirit of sportsmanship.

The politician told the “Obidient Movement” and admirers nationwide that outcome “is not a verdict on our exponentially growing strength”.
