Top 10 Newspaper Headlines Monday, July 4th 2022

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Buratai: APC is haven for treasury looters, says PDP

The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party has described the ruling All Progressives Congress as “a haven for treasury looters” following the alleged connection of a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, with the N1.8billion recovered by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission in a property in Abuja.

In a statement released late Sunday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to recall Buratai to face investigations over the allegation.

The statement titled, ‘N1.8bn: Recall Buratai for investigation, PDP tasks Buhari…insists APC is haven for treasury looters’, partly read, “The Peoples Democratic Party calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately recall the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), to face investigations and clear his name over alleged connection with the N1.8bn recovered in a property in Abuja by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC).

“The PDP’s demand for the recall and investigation of Gen. Buratai is predicated on the earlier assertion by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Babagana Monguno, after the exit of Gen. Buratai as COAS that the $1bn drawn from the national coffers under the All Progressives Congress administration for the purchase of arms to fight terrorism in our country could not be traced.

2. Kwara man allegedly sets own house ablaze, blames wife

A man believed to be in his early 50s on Sunday at Eyenkorin in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State allegedly set his own house on fire.

The house located at Lekki Phase One, Eyenkorin Area in the outskirt of Ilorin, the state capital was deliberately set on fire by the man whose identity was yet to be ascertained and claimed to be its owner.

Punch Metro gathered that the couple who had about four children quarreled and had been leaving separately for about two years.

Gunfire in a Copenhagen mall Sunday left several dead and several wounded, Danish police said, adding they had arrested one person in his twenties.

4. 2023: Keke Marwa Coalition writes Tinubu over VP slot

AS the search for the Presidential running mate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, continues, Commercial Tricycle operators have joined the call to the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to consider the choice of Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd) as his deputy.

Writing under a coalition of Keke Marwa Coalition (consisting of several Commercial Keke Marwa Operators Associations), the group, in an open letter to the APC’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said, “Marwa is the choice of the common people.”

According to the letter signed by the Zonal FCT Chairman of the association Kabiru Usman Akula and the Secretary, Babangida Isa, the group acknowledged Marwa’s contribution to creating livelihoods for millions of people through the tricycle transport system.

The letter reads: “We are members of a coalition of Commercial KEKE MARWA OPERATORS consisting of different Keke Marwa operators Associations.

5. 2023: We ‘re putting together strong coalition for Atiku in Ekiti – Arokodare

DESPITE the abysmal performance of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Ekiti State governorship election, a former member of the House of Representatives, has said that the main opposition party has “a new formidable coalition for Atiku Abubakar.”

Honourable Arokodare, who was in the House of Representatives between 2003 to 2007, said notwithstanding the alleged former Governor Ayo Fayose’s withdrawal of support for Alhaji Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, the party in Ekiti is bigger than any individual, and would bounce back to reckoning.

Recall that the former lawmaker had warned his party ahead of the Ekiti governorship election that it would come a distant third after alleging that Fayose sold out to the All Progressives Congress, APC, by preventing a more popular candidate, Segun Oni, in the PDP.

He, however, commended the foresight of the PDP leadership and National Working Committee, NWC, for “aborting the Ekiti PDP mega rally after seeing through the subterfuge concocted to exploit the party.”

6. Re-Murder of Deborah Yakubu: Archbishop Martins wants perpetrators punished

He said that the alleged killing of young Deborah Yakubu a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education is appalling, provocative, and inhuman.
