1. Buhari enjoyed respect from world leaders, says Adesina

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), enjoyed the respect of world leaders in his eight-year tenure.

“I have had the privilege of travelling with the President in the past eight years and I can tell you that he enjoyed so much respect from world leaders,” Adesina said in a 55-minute documentary titled ‘Buhari Was Here’ aired on Channels Television on Sunday.

The documentary which showcases the high points of the government will air on Channels Television, NTA and TVC .

2. Over $50bn oil industry projects unveiled in Bayelsa

Opportunities worth $50 billion were showcased at the 2023 Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair which was held at the weekend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State
This was disclosed by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board at the two-day fair which drew 1,086 registered participants.

The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Simbi Wabote, said international and indigenous companies participated in the unveiling, adding that they would be developed within five years.

According to him, the array of opportunities covered different segments of the industry and required proper collation as they run into billions of dollars.

3. Man City celebrate title glory with win over Chelsea

Manchester City celebrated their Premier League title triumph with a 1-0 win against Chelsea before Ilkay Gundogan lifted the trophy in front of their jubilant fans, while Leeds slipped closer to relegation on Sunday.

City clinched a fifth title in six seasons on Saturday when second placed Arsenal crashed 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

Pep Guardiola’s side marked their third successive title by winning a 12th consecutive league game as Julian Alvarez’s first-half goal extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 24 matches.

4. Diaspora Nigerians kick against televising presidential election tribunal

WITH about a week to the May 29 swearing-in of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared the winner of the February 25 presidential election, Bola Tinubu, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Diaspora Nigerians under the auspices of Global Nigerian Diaspora Forum, GNDP, weekend kicked against calls for televising proceedings of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

Speaking in a chat with Vanguard, the President of GNDF, Prof Mondy Gold, pointed out that with the tension blowing across the country after the February 25 presidential election, it is unnecessary to televise the proceedings.

Mondy said: “Nationally televised Presidential Election Petition Tribunal if we have not done it before we have to tread cautiously because we have experienced more ethnic conflicts since President Muhammadu Buhari came into power more than any other time in the history of Nigeria.

“So let us not create a situation where tempers will flare. The opinion of some political leaders in the country will lead to more divisions in the country because we have more problems and nobody should be encouraged to create more problems.

5. Dadin Kowa Dam project to boost power supply with 40MW — Minister

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman Adamu, weekend, revealed that the Dadin Kowa Multipurpose Dam project at Dadin Kowa Village, Yalmatu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, will boost power supply with 40 megawatts of electricity.

Adamu made this known during commissioning of the Dadin Kowa Multipurpose Dam, where he also said the power project is an integral component of Dadin-Kowa Multi-purpose Dam which had been commissioned in 1988 with a reservoir storage capacity of 2.8 billion cubic metres.

According to him, the dam is to provide 6,608 hectares irrigation development, 40 megawatts of electricity and daily supply 30,000 cubic metres of water.

6. Food production: Council trains over 60 seed producers

THE National Agricultural Seed Council, NASC, weekend, trained over 60 seed producers and stakeholders on high technical skills to produce quality seeds.

The Director General, NASC, Dr Philip Ojo, explained while speaking on the essence of the training, which forms part of the Council’s mandate to ensure training of seed producers and stakeholders across the country in order to have human capacity with the requisite knowledge and skills for quality seed production.

The participants had their training on new multiplication technology including the rudiments of quality seed production, processing, storage and handling; and enlightenment on the existing seed rules and regulations as enshrined in the new National Agricultural Seeds Council Act No 21 of 2019 to enable them operate within the confines of the law while producing and marketing seeds.

7. Buhari inaugurates $2.4m rail wagon assembly plant

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday inaugurate the Kajola Wagon Assembly Plant in Ogun State

The Minister of Transportation Engr Jaji Mu’azu Sambo, the Minister of State for Transportation Adewale Adewole Adegoroye, will lead other top government functionaries and management of the Federal Ministry of Transportation which would be led by the Permanent Secretary Dr Magdalene Ajani to host President Muhammadu Buhari.

The rail wagon Assembly plant, the first on the African continent, is a $2.4million project, is one of the two projects donated by the Chinese government through the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to help grow the railway industry not only in Nigeria, but in the African continent.

The second project is the University of Transportation, sited in President Buhari’s country home, Daura, Katsina State.

8. Human Rights: Domestic observers score Buhari, Armed Forces high on compliance

Some human rights groups and practitioners have scored the Nigerian Armed Forces high on their compliance with human rights in the last two years.
According to the experts, the appointment of the current crop of service chiefs led by the Chief of Army Staff, Gen Leo Irabor, triggered the monumental turnaround.

Nigerian troops were in the past accused of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, incommunicado detention, and sexual violence, among other abuses.

9. Kaduna: Bandits kill nine, kidnap three, injure others in Birnin Gwari

Suspected bandits have killed nine farmers and kidnapped three others in Unguwar Danko near Dogon Dawa village in Birnin Gwari Area of Kaduna State.

A source, who disclosed this on Saturday, said the incident took place on Saturday afternoon when the victims were working on their farms.

A State House of Assembly member-elect representing Kakangi Constituency, Yahaya Musa, confirmed the incident, saying all those killed were farmers and that those who sustained gunshot injuries were rushed to hospitals for treatment.

10. Apply OBJ’s style of debt forgiveness from creditors – Afe Babalola urges Tinubu

The founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola SAN, has advised the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to seek debt forgiveness for the country when he assumes office.

Babalola said he expects the incoming president to learn from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who spent two-three years of his administration begging for debt forgiveness for the nation.

He made the remarks at the weekend while answering questions from journalists after a lecture titled: “Smart Infrastructure: Catalyst for Sustainable Development held at the Alfa Belgore Hall of the university by Prof Bamidele Adebisi of the University of Manchester.
