Top 10 Newspaper Headlines Monday, August 3rd 2022

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

PUNCH NEWSPAPER

1. Rep, Ortom’s aide trade words over 2023 elections

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State,  Nathaniel Ikyur,  has dismissed the allegation that the governor and his aides are frustrating the political ambition of the lawmaker representing Gwer-East/Gwer-West Federal Constituency, Mark Gbillah, in the 2023 general election.

Ikyur, in a statement issued on Sunday, stated that Gbillah cannot be a threat to the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue.

Gbillah, who defected from the PDP to the New Nigeria Peoples Party, at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, announced that he had since crossed to the Labour Party and secured the latter’s ticket. He had raised the alarm over the listing of his name as senatorial candidate of the NNPP and the LP in the list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

2. Muslim-Muslim ticket: Ezekwesili knocks APC, PDP for insensitivity

Former Minister of Information, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has knocked the ruling All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party for not considering Nigeria’s cultural diversity and ethnoreligious factors before settling for their choice of presidential candidates.

A livid Ezekwesili aired her grievance when she appeared on Politics Today, a popular programme on Channels Television on Sunday night.

The presidential primaries of both parties, which were conducted in the second quarter of this year have produced former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the flagbearer of the APC and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as candidate of the PDP.

3. Why EndSARS protesters went to Lekki tollgate – Ezekwesili

Former Minister of Information, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, says the failure of the political class in the Nigerian government to listen to the agitation of young people was the reason they took to Lekki Toll Gate to vent their anger.

Ezekwesili made the clarification when she appeared on Politics Today, a popular programme on Channels Television on Sunday night.

The #ENDSARS protests lasted between October 7th and 20th in Lagos and several other states of the federation.

While the protests lasted, relations, friends and associates of missing persons claimed their relations had either been killed or held incommunicado by security agents.

VANGUARD NEWSPAPER

4. 2023: Tinubu appoints Gov Masari, Wamako as campaign Senior Advisers

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress(APC) 2023 presidential candidate has appointed Gov. Aminu Masari of Kastina State as Campaign Senior Adviser on Administration and Government.

The former two-term Lagos State governor, also appointed former governor of Sokoto State, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko as Senior Adviser Special Duties.

According to the letters of appointment made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja and signed by Tinubu, both men are to serve in the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

The letters said both Masari and Wamakko’s impressive political achievement and the exemplary leadership demonstrated as governor and Senator, respectively in their states and as party members qualified them for the responsibility.

5. FG cautions ASUU over disobeying National Industrial Court order

The Federal Government has cautioned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over disobeying the order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) to call off its ongoing strike.

Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, gave the advice in a statement signed by Mr Olajide Oshundun, the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, in the ministry on Sunday in Abuja.

“The union is dishonest and misleading its members and the general public, that it has filed an appeal as well has a stay of execution of the order of NICN on Sept. 2, though it has none of this.

“Rather, ASUU only filed an application for a permission to appeal the order. It also attached to the application, a proposed notice of appeal which it intends to file if the leave to appeal is granted.

6. 2023: Tinubu, most qualified presidential candidate — ex-Gov Daniel

A former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Sunday described the Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, as the most qualified candidate among all those vying for the top most political job in the country.

Daniel disclosed this at an empowerment programme put together by Gateway Front Foundation and Gateway Movement, held in Sagamu, the headquarters of Sagamu local government area of Ogun State.

Daniel, who is the Ogun East Senatorial candidate of APC in the forthcoming general elections, said he owes the successes recorded during his 8-year tenure as the governor of Ogun State to his relationship with Tinubu.
