1. Opposition won’t decide senate presidency, speakership — Lawan

As the race for principal offices in the 10th National Assembly enters full swing, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Friday, in Abuja, said the opposition cannot determine who emerges even though the All Progressives Congress no longer had the strong presence it once enjoyed.

He also said the governing APC must involve the opposition parties in the leadership structure to ensure legislative stability.

“There is no way an opposition will decide who should be the senate president or who should be the speaker; it is our party and other leaders that will decide,” Lawan told State House, correspondents after joining residents of the Federal Capital Territory for a Sallah homage to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

When asked about growing concerns that the opposition may bank on the reported division in the party and seize the process, he said: “I don’t think opposition parties are planning to usurp because it is presumptuous that the APC will not be a united party.

2. Paris court sentences man to life term for 1980 synagogue bombing

A Paris court on Friday sentenced Lebanese-Canadian citizen Hassan Diab to life in prison in absentia for the 1980 bombing of a synagogue in which four people died.

The court followed prosecutors’ request for the maximum possible punishment against Diab, now 69 and a university professor in Canada.

Prosecutors had said in their summing-up that there was “no possible doubt” that Diab, the only suspect, was behind the attack.

3. Heavy rain washes off newly constructed drainage in Anambra

An ongoing drainage channel being constructed by the Anambra State Government located on Niger Street in Fegge, Onitsha,  collapsed as a result of heavy rainfall on Thursday night.

A video of the collapsed drainage circulating on social media and showing the channel, with a resident in the area commenting, described the ongoing construction work as substandard.

The individual in the video said, “Look at the kind of road that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is building for us, just one rainfall in Onitsha, and the road has been washed off, while the drainage has collapsed.

4. Senate shifts resumption of plenary by one week

The Senate had on 5th April adjourned plenary till April 25th for Easter and Sallah celebrations.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the Clerk, Senate, Chinedu Francis Akubueze said, ” This is to inform all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the resumption of the Senate in plenary has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 25th April 2023 to Tuesday, 2nd April 2023.

”All Distinguished Senators are by this notice requested to resume sitting in plenary on Tuesday, 2nd May 2023 by 10. am prompt.”

5. Imo guber: 27 LP Chairmen pledge support for Athan to sack Uzodimma

The twenty-seven local government chairmen of Imo state, Labour Party, LP, on Friday, pledged their full support to the Imo governorship candidate of, LP, Senator Athan Achonu, to sack incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress, APC, come November 2023 governorship election.

They took the decision at their party secretariat in Owerri.

Speaking, the LP, Chairman of Ohaji/Egbema council area, and the coordinator of the 27 Imo LP, chairmen, Oshimmiri Chjioke, said that Imo people have been waiting for the Labour party to give them a government that has a human face.

6. AMCON debt: Project Nollywood directors react

Owners of Project Nollywood Production Limited, including Charles Novia, Fred Amata and Fidelis Duker have reacted to the story making the rounds that they have been dragged to court by Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, over N435 million unpaid debt, insisting that the matter has been settled amicably since last year.

An online portal had reported days back that the three popular Nollywood producers and their company, Project Nollywood Production Limited, have been dragged before a Federal High Court in Lagos, following an unpaid loan of N435 million secured from Eco Bank Nigeria Plc since 2007.

But reacting to the report in a statement made available to Saturday Vanguard, the directors of Project Nollywood Production Limited,said the case has been settled amicably between their legal representatives and MacMilton since 2022 in which their side of the story was tabled.

7. IPOB mounts pressure on Otti to cancel Gowon’s invitation to inauguration

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has advised Abia Governor-Elect Dr. Alex Otti to cancel the invitation extended to former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon(rtd) to his inauguration.

The pro-separatist group said In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful on Friday that the extension of the invitation to Gowon to attend the inauguration would invoke past memories of 1967 genocide against the Biafra people.

He advised Oti not to commence his tenure with the memories of “our people massacred during the 1967 Genocide against the Biafran people.

8. JAMB directs UTME candidates to print examination notification slips

Ahead of April 25, 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed candidates sitting for the examination to proceed to print their notification slips from Thursday, 20th – 24th, April.

The Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, announced this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

The statement reads: “All candidates taking the 2023 UTME are expected to print their examination notification slips on or before Monday, 24th April, 2023, by visiting https://www.jamb.gov.ng, click on “2023 UTME SLIP PRINTING” on the menu bar to know the time and venue of their examination.

9. Abiodun: We’ll complete new Hospital Road, Ogijo in three months

The Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday, assured the residents of Hospital Road, Ogijo and the environs in Sagamu Local Government Area of the state, that the key township road would be complete in the next three months.

According to the governor, residents and motorists plying the road would soon experience succour, comfort and economic boom as the road which was not in place until it was awarded for construction by his administration would be completed in the record time

Abiodun gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen shortly after inspecting work done so far on the 1.5 kilometres road.

10. Learn from mistakes of Buhari’s administration – Chief Imam advises Tinubu

The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Abdulrahman Oloyede, has enjoined the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to learn from the mistakes of the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oloyede noted that this is necessary for the incoming administration to run a successful administration.

The Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies made these appeals while addressing journalists shortly after he led a congregation of thousands of Muslims to observe the obligatory Eld el-Fitr prayer on Friday.
